Still looking for a hat for showing, one of the ones with a flesh harness. I tried a few on today - Champion ones (no good at all) and another that was about £80, which also was entirely the wrong shape :( I'm still looking into the Caldene one but have to find somewhere to try it first.
If anyone knows of any shaped similar to Harry Hall hats, let me know!! My other hat is a Harry Hall and fits nicely :)

Also, gloves! What colour should I go for? I'm looking for a green tweed (Caldene) jacket, with beige breeches, cream? shirt and either green or navy tie? black boots obviously and horses tack is black. Hat will be navy.

Thank you once again!!

Gloves to match your jods, I think... Although when A did 'proper' showing a bit on a pony she rode for someone she used dark brown and it wasn't an issue (we didn't fancy buying new gloves!).

I can't tell you anything about hats, other than mine was a navy velvet champion with a flesh harness when I was showing but that was years and years ago, so you're definitely looking for the right thing!

As for your gloves, match them to your tack. You haven't said what class you're doing (or I just haven't read about it), but if it involves jumping, black material gloves are acceptable, as long as they're smart and not skanky yard gloves! If you're not doing any jumping, try and get proper black leather gloves that match your tack. I would go with a navy tie to compliment your hat, and also purely on a traditional note, a green tie is a bit......out there!! xoxo

Sounds sensible :) I think I need to find a jacket first I've just realised, I suppose it also depends on what sort of tweed the jacket is!? I wanted green but have been looking at brown/blue also and brown gloves would look very random with green on blue if nothing else was brown I think! :p Is black okay??

nikkimariet - sounds good! Agreeing with navy tie I think, have been looking at a few photos just now and it looks smart :) Black gloves it is then! Which makes life easier as I know which ones I want!
I'm not entirely sure what class (I'm just going to be doing the riding!) but the pony is a Fell stallion, so native pony classes?? No jumping anyway.
Thank you!

Brown gloves are correct. Women shouldn't wear black in the show ring except for their boots. I would go for a brown or green tweed if you are buying one as blue can be considered amateurish. I would also go for a brighter tie than green or navy like red.

Dark brown gloves would be correct. I hope we get pictures of this...can't go wrong with a lovely native :D

So confusing!! All this showing business is scrambling my brain :p okay, so dark brown gloves, green jacket, brighter tie maybe, buy a hat....

The pony's owner loves her photography so I'm sure there will be LOTS of photos! :D We haven't decided when our first show will be yet but he needs to lose a few pounds first and I need to get used to him! I've ridden him twice now and today was a little better than the first time although he is still a bit lazy! :)

Glad I could help!

I used to have a little section B I took for Mountain & Moorland classes, he was ace.

"Brown gloves are correct. Women shouldn't wear black in the show ring except for their boots."

I used to have black tack on him, and used to wear black gloves.....because brown gloves would be weird and totally non matching (and matching in showing is standard). My jacket used to be a green/navy tweed and was lovely.

Don't go for a red tie. You are on a native, not on a flicky toes dainty show pony. xoxo

Matching in showing is not how you coordinate your outfit it is about tradition. Women wear brown gloves because traditionally black was only worn when in mourning by ladies and if your were in mourning you should not be riding.

Brown and green tweeds were traditionally better quality whereas blue was cheaper and worn by staff which is why brown and green are popular now and blue is not.

A plain red tie is perfectly acceptable on a M+M and will lift the outfit without being OTT.

Just been looking at photos of people riding fell ponies.... and beige/light-golden brown coloured gloves seem popular also!?

Thank you for everyone that's made suggestions so far though :D

We showed the connies in brown tack, blue hat, brown gloves and cane and a green tweed that had an overcheck that was a reddy brown colour so used a cream shirt and burgundy tie with a small white spot and sometimes a burgundy waistcoat. When she was riding in junior classes she wore short brown boots but in open classes she wore long black boots which is apparently correct on a large breed.

i would go for a navy hat with leather harness, hairnet, navy spot tie, pale yellow shirt, brown gloves, a quality jacket, brown showing cane, canary breeches(similar color to shirt but not the bright yellow breeches), long black boots. and brown tack well oiled so it is dark (definitely not black tack for m&m s) a leather girth, and a dark brown well fitted numnah. But enjoy and at the end of the day it is supposed to be fun. watch what other competitors wear. you can always change things around a bit! and a well schooled responsive pony!

If you are on the lookout for a harry hall-like hat, I believe just togs are quite similar, so possibly try their JTE show jumping hat-

I know it says show jumping, but it is quite smart and would be suitable for the show ring :) also the junior style is quite similar to the shape of harry hall?
Hope it helps :)

p.s, I wear red tie with golden spots the fell I ride, with a corn shirt, green tweed, navy hat, corn jods, brown gloves, brown tack, and brown joddy boots as i'm under 16 and pony is still novice :) it looks smart when put together-especially corn jods against dark horse :p

^ That's a correctly dressed junior for a mountain and moorland class... For non-junior, add long boots/ gaiters and you're away. She has a black hat as we weren't going to buy another one just for showing, brown gloves (once again, what she had!), a pale green fine tweed jacket (don't get a heavy tweed, you'll boil and it's not as smart), canary jods, a white shirt (why buy a new one?!) and a navy tie with tiny white spots on. She looks smart, and was well-placed. Don't rush out and buy new stuff- really not worth it unless you're planning at going in at county level.

But things like a blue shirt (£3 in ASDA) and a red tie will be about the same if you go to a charity shop these things don't have to be expensive but create a more professional finished look.
