After our little 'incident' yesterday my son's hat is broken quite badly. Whcih has shocked me in a way as he fell on very soft sand. You can feel a HUGE crack under the velvet

. He'snever fallen off before and I always store my hats carefully. It was about 6 months old.

OH is complaining saying it shouldnt break that easily, but IMO at least the hat broke and not child's head.

Anyway, son has decided he wants a jockey scull now. What's the best (but not too pricey, bearing in mind that his head is growing rapidly), yet lightweight hat on the market? My daughter (toddler) also needs one, so I'll be needing two of them, one a tiny 00 size.
 
Charles Owen do a children's one which my son has. Lightweight, and they can choose which cover to put on it. They are not that expensive - I think around £30 or so.
 
That's why my son wants one, he wants a funky cover. I'm also under the impression that they're stronger than the traditional velvet ones??
 
I have just bought the champion junior hat and love it. It cost me about £40. They do the big sizes in the junior range too, not sure why lol.

Would say either charles owen (although the fit was really bad when I tried them) or a champion.
 
Providing a hat meets the relevant standard, then they should all be the same as I understand it. It may be that your son's head hit a stone which cracked the hat. What standard is the damaged hat?
The charles owen young rider comes in a 000 so should be small enough for your daughter.
 
I would email the manufacturers and describe the event because assuming that he fell on sand and there wasn't a rock underneath it it really shouldn't have cracked.

I have fallen off onto the top of my head several times, onto harder surfaces than a sand school and never seen so much as a mark on my hat. Considering that safety standards are supposed to be better than ever this doesn't seem right.

Whatever brand it was I certainly wouldn't buy it again
 
My sons have different shaped heads and definitely prefer different brands. It's definitely worth trying a few on to ensure they stay comfortable. One is in a Gatehouse and one a Charles Owen. Both in Skulls.
 
If you have landed on your head you should not still be using the hat, regardless of whther is is marked or not. I'd be pleased it was cracked, it has taken the impact fully.
