Hi, was just wondering if anyone has ever sewn a pompom onto their hatsilk? Is it simple or am I best buying a silk with one on it? For those who have pompoms on their silks, how big are they? Toffee crisps for all those who answer!

Those would be some really comfy boots :D

Posie, I've not done it but pom poms are simple (and fun!) to make, and you'd just need some loops with the needle to attach it. Add for size, why don't you do a google image search and see what proportions look good? Course the best thing about making your own is you can make it exactly how you want it :)

Making your own works, and just stitch it on.

My sister's XC hat has a pom pom, which is bright pink. It's about 3 inches diameter, and looks quite cool :) Helps pick her out from the sea of teenage girls on plain bay horses in photos!

I always think they look quite jolly..I like passing the strings of racers near me as many of the lads have bright silks & pompoms & it looks nice & cheery!

I added a sparkly Christmas decoration pom pom to my hat for the local SJ comp a couple of Christmases ago. It looked great! and got (good) comments. Was easy to sew on but only lasted the day - either my bad sewing or the wind turbulance from crazy horse charging 'round the course at mach 2!

I have a very large very yellow one on my silk for hacking out - my small niece made it and I sewed it on. Despite the best attempts of Cornish weather (wild wind) and hedges (low, whippy and full of brambles) it's still there after 2 years. I get a lot of comments, not all polite, but at least people see me when I'm out and about in it!

I love pom poms, not just for hat silks but I just think they are a brilliantly happy thing in this dreary world. You can make your own with two discs of cardboard and then just make sure you sew through the middle, I would suggest:

Fashion your delightful pom pom, then with a needle and thread sew in and out through the middle a few times so it is secure, then sew through the top of your hatsilk, in a cross like manner under and around the button on top and through the pom pom again a few times, so it ends up symmetrical.

THEN, do not lose your enthusiasm for pom poms, make a pom pom scarf http://www.pompomemporium.com/content/how-make-a-pom-pom-scarf

I especially like this picture of some trendsetting girls enjoying pom pom jackets http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-BRATS-Jacket-Dance-Hip-Hop-Costume-SZ-COLOR-CHOICES-/270547701669
