I am planning on going to a have-a-go fun agility but I have a question would I be able to keep biscuit on a lead ? As he recall/heel work isn't quite as good as I would like I am very worried about him running off.
You should be able to, have they got someone you can phone and ask?
You want a good recall yes but not heel work, you want the dog to be confident enough to work ahead of you - just in case you get into it
When I was at a club (now I have one-to-one with a friend who's a qualified instructor) people would train on lead still - it's not as easy though but for a few attempts not a prob You'll get hooked!
Im interested in doing this with Darcy Dobermann when she has finished her KC Bronze course. I thought also it would be a good idea to have them on a lead for a while just to see if they take to it.
You will almost certainly be expected to keep him on the lead for the first few sessions at least.
I have a dog that cannot be let off the lead in normal circumstances (no recall) but our agility class is held in a fenced compound so we've managed to progress to off-lead work safely. The untrainable can't-go-off-the-lead dog can now do a full course off the lead and hang around in between exercises without having to be put back on it.
Use a nice long comfy lead, one of the police style ones with clips so you can adjust the length are good, my favourite goes up to 1.8m.
My dad once took our old dog over a line of jumps on the flexi and thought it would be a good idea to let the lead extend, thus saving him the need to run. Which was great until the flexi ran out, and dad ended up being hauled over every jump and nearly into the tunnel
We do bits of agility at training on lead (A frame, single jump, long jump) and it doesnt cause a problem. Have just been given a set for the garden, with hoop jump, weaving poles, single jump and tunnel- Dex thinks it is F A B !!
Bettyboo didnt you post asking me where I am? I thought you did and answered and now its disappeared. Am I going gagabecause if you didnt I have made a very random post.
I asked you but then it dissapered so I presumed someone had reported it. I was only asking incase you were near me, so I could see if I could suggest any clubs
