Help please. Active situation. A neighbour's dog got out from their garden. I have it in mine, only it's owners are away and hes a rescue, so trusting no-one.

What's the best way to contain / capture? My dogs are inside and aren't happy. I can't let them out.

Update: I caught and got him home. He's a sweet lad.

Dog warden may be best bet, unless whoever is looking after it can be contacted.

If you have neighbours mobile phone number ask them as they best know what the dog tolerates. Whether you can use treats and a lead to take him back for instance, or they tell you to call someone the dog is ok with.

If next door house is open?…presumably for dog to escape?…..can you herd him back? I’ve done this with stray cows and random dogs with a long stick to guide them.

I have not been in this situation, but have seen various comments on dog lost FB pages to say don't chase. Try sitting down and staying still, with tempting food, and allow dog to come to you (owner's brother). Don't try and grab as soon as it does come. Gain trust before doing so. If you are on FB, contact your local dog lost page for more advice. Good luck.

Whoever the dog seems to listen to could try using stinky treats on the ground to lure it a trail back home, calling it and encouraging, but keeping forward to home distance from the treat, if neighbours not too far away?
This is if the dog is calm enough and listening.

Got him about 6' feet on a trail but then he's off. Open farmland so it's a bit risky, though tempted.

It’s positive he came to you, if nervous he likely would respond to soft calming energy. If he has been lead-trained to an extent, then patience, treats, calm friendliness and slipping on a lead is potentially possible.

Do they know if he’s friendly to other dogs?

Try Lost Dog Recovery?

They'll hopefully be able to help secure him using a cage and tasty food. Our local group seem to be really good with nervous dogs.

The fact he's safe in your garden is a hopefully a huge help as they don't need to locate him.
