Just want the experience of people that have bought horses from the field that haven't been in work for a couple of months for whatever reason i,e loss of rider, finances, lack of time..

What were your experiences.. did you manage to pick up a bargain or a disaster???

Bought one yesterday - I'll keep you posted

No, it's not for me. I guess you never can be to sure how legit someone is being when they sell from the field, you must get a lot of genuine ones where they have no time for the horse, or rider has outgrown it, but just want others experiences really.

Have bought two.
One ended up British Eventing to PN very pleased
other one is the best horse i have ever owned love him to bits

Yes but went in with my eyes WIDE open - didn't believe a word they said apart from colour and sex (hard to lie about that!) - trusted my own experience and gut feeling which thankfully worked out. (just re-read that - didn't mean to sound arrogant

!)

I think there are probably more dodgy ones at the moment being sold from the field as people prepared to take rock bottom prices just to get rid - but bound to be genuine ones too.

I think it's better if you hear word of mouth so you have some degree of recommendation rather from ads....

Yes - I knew she was "not a novice ride" and was recovering from a tendon injury (ex racer). Turned out to be a bit nappy, soon solved that and she was a lovely little hack, if sharp, until she developed arthritis in the knees. So mixed results really.

Yup, myself and some friends bought 4 ponies from a field turned away. All were 13.2-14.2hh 4-5yrs and had been broken and turned away for at least a year. This was about 10/11yrs ago.
Onewas a 4yo dark bay mare my friend bought - jumped to 148 567yo level (1.10m-1m20) before being sold aged 7 to Sweden where she is now jumping Pony Grand Prixs.
One was a blu and white 5yo 13.2hh who resembled a belgian blue. Had a penchant for bucking 3 strides before every fence but was always dbl clear and fast against the clock. Was grade A at 7yrs (owned by a rider who currently rides in nations Cups for Ireland) He was super fun cross country, PC etc but too much for the rider who bought him frommy friend so has spent the last 7yrs sitting in a field doing nothing.
Then my pony was an entire dapple grey reg Connemara who we gelded straight away and turned away then rebroke at 5yrs old. Hes also Grade A but not quite good enough for 1.30classes - his forte is 1.20m. Hes currently in italy.
The last was a dapple grey reg 5yo Connemara mare. She was the worst of the lot to be ridden. She would just plant her feet when a rider got on nd wouldnt move no matter what. So we turned her away for 6mths. Instructor actually didnt hold out much hope for her, but we spent 8 weeks lunging and driving her and I remember being the first one to ride her after that - T was dumbstruck when she actually trotted around, turned and rode on well first time being ridden. She turned out quite well, a good friend ofmine bought her and started jumping her SJAI aged 7yrs. Pony amassed alot of points (Grade B) in the 18mths they jumped together til rider was overage. She had her first foal in June of this year. Its a real cracker - purebred Connemara too.

So we had a lot of luck with 4 broken and turned away ponies, 3 of which are Grade A showjumpers and one Grade B.
