My horse went into the weiper's centre for a tooth extraction. Turned out the tooth needed to be removed the hard way - through a hole in his skull and the tooth hammered out.

He did well following the surgery on Friday, but yesterday, gave me a fright and decided not to eat. I dont blame him, having had a general anaesthetic and then a hammer to the head, is a bit traumatic for him.

Fingers crossed he eats soon. I am very worried.
 
Don't worry too much just yet. A few years ago my boy refused to eat for 4 days (he had in fact fractured his lower jaw but we were all convinced the problem was elsewhere so the Xrays didn't go far enough down the head) and lived on nothing but sloppy sugar beet during that time. He did drop an alarming amount of weight but once he started eating again he picked up really quickly. Hay was still a problem for a couple of weeks but everything else was fine.

Your boy's jaw is probably pretty sore so I imagine anything that doesn't need much chewing would be welcome. Good luck!
 
Many thanks, I am sorry to hear about your poor boy and hope he made a full recovery, but at the same time am pleased that not eating due to mouth pain is not unusual, they can survive and that haylage is a problem for a few weeks.

I am reassured. Have been wringing myself inside out about him.
 
He is picking at his feed and at his haylage. I have asked for him to have a well soaked sloppy feed and have bought some mint for him.

He is on IV Bute.
