Have I fixed everything now?

This is not normally my style, but could I ask you all to just cross your fingers for me for just one second?

I have just had someone out to look at my horse's muscle soreness - caused by the saddles which did not fit, and the ulcers and who knows what else. He was in pain, basically everywhere - she likened it to when you do too much in the gym and the next day it hurts if someone even lays a hand on you.

The good news is, after she had worked on him for about an hour he was a much happier chap and she thinks this will transform him. She's seeing him again in about 10 days and hopes there will not be too much to do - in between now and then I have to just hack (bang goes £60+ on BD entries, I do not even want to add up how much I have lost on entry fees in the past 18 months!).

So now I have fixed:
1. Ulcers
2. Diarrhea caused by ulcer treatment
3. Badly fitting saddles
4. Sore muscles

He is due a routine dental check (but will have to wait until Jan for that, he's seen every six months so don't think that is a major deal), and *touches wood frantically* his feet are fine.

I would like to think that I have finally, finally done everything I can to make him into a happy horse (interestingly he was much less grumpy in the stable after she'd finished). I would just like to be able to go out next year, do some N and elementary BD, jump some discovery and newcomers and work back up to Novice eventing. I would like to do it without losing hundreds of pounds in entry fees, spending thousands of pounds with the vet, saddler and on supplements. I just would like to have a bit of fun on the nice horse who was going so well 2 years ago.

If this does not happen then he is free to a good home and I am going to take up knitting.

Well, having tried everything the vet could think of and ending up spending a fortune on biopsies and steroids, they were fixed by a man called Jonny who runs a company called Silverlining Herbs (Website ) to whom I am eternally grateful as I was sick to the back teeth of everything being covered in sh1t and having to change clothes every time I went within 10ft of the horse. It probably wasn't terribly nice for the horse either! I smiled to myself this morning when I broke one of the tynes of my shavings fork on a dropping - result!

Is it bad to say I have no idea? It's the lady Chatter1 and lec use - and I thought if it was good enough for a 3* horse it was good enough for mine! I am slowly but surely getting myself on the books of all Chatter1's horse-people - I have her farrier too....

I know I should have checked all manner of things first before I let her within 100ft of my horse, but I trust Chatter1's opinion and TBH I thought I could always say 'stop'!

To me it looked like Physio/chiropractic manipulation. She spent a lot of time releasing muscle spasms under his neck with flexion and massage and stretches, that had the knock-on effect of sorting his back along the spine without her needing to touch it, and then she sorted the muscles around the pelvis. He was trying to bite you and practically collapsing if you touched him (esp fingers along either side of the spine) before she started. By the end he was almost asleep and letting me stroke him without trying to savage me - this is unheard of for him - he's not a horse you can 'pet' normally. Poor sod, I can't even begin to describe how guilty I feel.

You really have been jumping through hoops with your lad, I can't really see you as a knitter!!!! So i'll defo see you out and about at BE - fingers crossed

You'd be surprised Kick_On - I am very handy with the old knitting needles....or at least I used to be (my mother sees knitting as an essential skill so taught me as a child - god knows if I could still do it now though).

I notice no-one has taken me up on the potential offer of a free horse, very wise!

I have come to the conclusion that you get what you pay for - I'm not taking any more freebies!!!

nar that's not fair............. i'll take

as he'll fit in prefectly with my hunter and we could have grumpy competetions in barn - it would be a very close

Ah bless she said he was sore but I'm sure she'll fix him...... she's definately max's favourite person, he loves her and if he is only a slightly bit sore he'll orbit you before you've even put both feet in the saddle!! I've tried many back people over the years, including one who said I needed a new saddle made to measure and within 1 week of having this and many treatments my poor boy had put me in hospital and off work for 4 months. I trust her as I never tell her whats wrong with a horse and she will find the exact same problems as I find with them when I ride them!!

Anyway if I tell her not to fix him does that mean he's mine for free......

PMSL you've changed your tune - you had your chance at Blenheim, I tried to give him to you then but you were having none of it!! I think it is only fair for you to stand aside and let others have a crack really....

B had a completely bewildered expression on his face throughout, like he was really trying to understand what and why, but just could not fathom exactly what the weird humans were up to this time!

.... harsh I seem to remember saying you could deliver him back to mine on the way home.......

That's true! Complete with fat leg, busted headcollar and vets bill....

What a relief, hope your perserverence pays off and that he's now fixed. Not with a horse but I took Humphrey (the grumpy old dog) to a masseuse in desperation because I was told by various experts that he had degenerative arthritis riddled all the way along his spine and that he'd never be active again. Mortified I got him xrayed and they found nothing so took him to a masseuse and after 3 treatments he was back on form and bouncing around like a puppy - I really thought that he'd just turned into an old dog and there was no way back. As a result, I'm a real believer in that sort of treatment, although i realise yours sounds more chiro ish than that but do think they can make a huge huge impact.

Good luck and hope it fixes... if not, I'd bite off your hand to give B a home!

Mind you, the truck is easy - you simply throw money at the problem and the knowledgable men fix it (feminism, what's that??!), there is no guess work, they buy parts, fit them, then bill me and then the truck works again. Soooo much easier than the horse!!

Thanks K - so do I! I am sure this is it, I have a good feeling about it all, first time I've had that in about 2 years.

However, if push comes to shove, I may just hold you to that offer

Sounds like a chap I use who is called an "equine manipulator". It's very impressive what they can do; reminds me of my sports masseur.

I'm glad you seem to have everything sorted. I shall keep my fingers crossed for you, if you do the same for me?!

[/ QUOTE ]Oh the nievety(sorry spelling)I have been working on an iveco (turbo dailey. Rear brake shoes £600,so sent them off to be relined instead. Phone call from reliners ,bit of a problem, the courier broke a lining . A few days go by , I ring back, Any news? Yes we got the new lining in ,great, says I. They then tell me the problem. You remember that courier, ?Yes I reply, clouds of impending doom gathering. Well he has broken this one as well. So how long to get a new on. You cant ,there are no more. Oh well you will have to go elsewhere says I. They then explain , "when we say there are no more it means no one anywhere has any, None Nil,Zero. The factory in Germany that made them even have none and no plans to make any more ,in the near future(or ever)In the end we had to have the lining custom made. It arrived today, and definately not by that bloody courier.

Think 2010 will definitely be your year. I always believe that once things have hit rock bottom the only way is up!

Sounds like you're gradually turning things around and you'll soon have your wonderful boy back

But see the difference is, you know what the problem is - relining brake shoes, you know how to fix it - get them relined. Solving the problem is not the issue, it's the getting the bits to solve it - and to do that you have thrown money at the problem. Whereas with the horse it is all so blooming vague and there are many different variables which could be having an effect so you change them one by one, which takes forever and may have some other, unforeseen effect on something else entirely. Plus I bet you are confident that when that truck goes out it will perform exactly as expected....I, on the other hand, haven't a clue whether there is something else no-one knew was missing from the jigsaw!
