So after 10 years out the saddle I’ve just brought a 16.3hh warmblood with the most amazing temperament to hack out 3-4 times a week. My daughter is just coming of lead rein and my plan was to get a horse I can also hack with her and her 11.2hh pony when she’s ready. After viewing some nappy 15.2hh horses I found this one, he has the kindest nature and is fab in traffic which lead me to buy him on the spot! I knew he was bigger than I wanted but i didn’t realise just how big until I got him home and looking at him next to the pony I’m worried I’ve made a huge mistake!! Am I crazy????

I think as long the horse is right for you and does the job you require height doesn't really matter, I had a lovely 16.3 warmblood 100% in traffic safe to hack you could have led a pony from her all day long, I have 2 much smaller Arabs now which although I think one would be ok the other is definitely not a nanny horse he can be hot to hack.

I guess you just see how it goes. Unless you have an option to return him it seems a little unfair to the horse to pass him on without giving him a chance based on a feature he cannot change and that you knew full well before you even met him.

No, not a mistake at all - as long as your horse ticks all the boxes and you are happy that's all that matters.:)

I'm 5'8" and ideally would probably look for a horse that is around 16 hh. However I ride my homebreds or those that I bought as foals so have to go with what I have got and the smallest is 16:2 and the largest at 17:3. I also used to ride my daughter's 14:2 pony. Size doesn't really matter as long as you feel comfortable on the horse.

nope. If he's as quiet and sensible as you describe he's perfect! He could be 18.2hh and if he was that perfect he'd be right!! Don't sweat it. enjoy! and and where is the picture?!!!

I completely agree with you! The thought of doing that to him is making feel ill, the horse is perfect for me just feel like I lost sight of why I was getting him and it’s got me in a state.
