I have had the offer to move Bruce to friends of my parent who have just moved house. 20 mins up the road from me.

They now have 10 acres and live behind an international competition yard.

They have offered me free livery : ) for Bruce.

Now I have a couple of issues with this.

> No sand school

> It is 18.5 mins further away than my current yard

> They have no idea about horses

> Bruce would live alone.


The pros are this

>Its freeeeeeeee

>They are nice people

>It is behind somewhere I could get tip top instruction

> I would be on my own (this is a pro to me, I never ride out with people anyway and if I do I box to my best friends yard as its better hacking)

> He is a builder so I could probably wangle a sand school!!!!

> They have offered to look after the horses Mon -Fri whilst I am at work.

> They sort of want to sponsor me so I can compete more (!!!!!!!!) The sponsorship would be the savings I make on livery

So, do you think I should consider it?

What I was going to suggest is this

Bruce moves but i also get a young cob type that can live out that I leave until the summer and then bring on. This will be my horse but I will let him be used by the property owners wife, who rides, but only riding school level...and give her free instruction at weekends. He will basically be hers apart from I am responsible for his costs. I will also have a companion horse like a vetran that can be left alone without worrying about being on his own.

I will also pay someone to go and muck out/ride out for me Mon - Fri whilst I am at work etc so they are all done. There would only be one stable to muck out as the others would be field kept.

Hmmm....do you think it would work? I have a horrid feeling it might not but I would like it too.
 
It sound like a great idea, i think it could definatly work if you are sure that you will get along with these people, however if you have a fall out it could get quite iffy! but they sound like nice people and you sound as though you get on with them, and i think your getting a pretty good deal!! I'd definatly through caution to the wind and go with this one!
 
The difference between driving 2 and a half mins and 20 mins is a LOT - believe me, I did it last year and now I am back to the yard down the road - far more convenient, so that would be my main sticking point.
 
Biggest negative IMO is him living alone.....first thought about that was"hell,not paying for livery buy him a friend",lol!

Trust your git on this one, if it feels right it probably is.

I would get 2 shetlands for him - is he the clingy type if so 3 is better than 2 !!

also id be carefull with them not knowing anything about horses - they may think he looks cute laying in the field all day when he has colic or something (sorry thinking of worst senarious) !!

Yes, but can you afford to keep them at livery if this place doesn't work out???
 
I have Parker at a yard about 5 mintuis from my house, it means if all else fails I can walk, pop back if I forget something, visit more regularly and often pass it so can just call in. Then my own yard is 15-20 minuits away which means 1 hour 20 driving a day!! It's hard to go twice a day. But whats the chances of a nice bit of lan/yard for sale around Arundel.

Free livery really does make a difference!

I would like long term, if it turned bitter, you would have bruce, younge cob and a vertern to pay for livery!
 
I would probably go for it BUT id probably loan another horse rather than buty another one so that if i needed to move back then i could give the loan horse back rather than struggle to afford two!
 
I'd move and buy a youngster to bring on...but I'd check out two things first - whether I'd have to pay Employers Liability Insurance on the part time employee (I think you will) and I'd check out the legal position regarding free lessons for the owner...just to be on the safe side as so many people sue.....

I have instructors insurance...so thats OK. Surely the freelance groom woudl be insured too? I would do it on a self employed basis.

As for the 2 horses if it all went wrong. I have 5 vetrans at grass already but I dont want to seperate them as they have lived together for over 17 years...but adding one more may not be such a problem....

And I would sell the youngster.
