have/would you try western

Tried it once and LOVED it. I would definately convert. Found the saddle comfy, preferred having the horn there for safety reasons (I held on when we went for a gallop!). As a nervous rider I found the horses so responsive, lively yet calm.

A friend of mine is a trail guide in Colorado. Last time I was there we were galloping up and down hills, over rocky paths. Madness that I would never dream of doing in an English saddle. I love how secure the saddles make you feel, and with the guide being my friend she let me keep my stirrups slightly shorter than normal.

But I would never, ever, train a horse to do both. She currently has a mare that's broken to both English and western, and she's consequently very confused and not wonderfully trained in either. :(

sounds more like very poor training... as there are a lot of horses that do both very well and top dressage people are useing western training methods also remeber western has its roots very much in classical horsemanship I'm very lucky my instructor has riden to PSG and now does a mix of english and western lessons ..

Ditto the above.

All of my trainers horses can be ridden both Western and English with no problem at all. All down to the Training the horse receives and the capability of the rider.

Trainers Daughter completes both Western and Dressage and wins regularly in both disciplines!

And there are many different types of western saddles for different disciplines. Different shapes of trees, different types and sizes of seat, different heights of horns, different stirrups, different fenders. And you can start training your horse in an English saddle (not for fast manoeuvres, but that's more advanced stuff). It is great as you get older to have a horse who does not lean on your hands and has learnt to trot and canter in a smooth, relaxed manner.
