Given the amount of posts on this subject and my own personal baptism of fire, can you please answer this poll?



Please also tell us what breed your dog is, what it gets fed and what sort of treatments you have used and if you are happy with your vet treatment and the area affected (ears, tail, paws, etc)
 
Never had an ichy dog luckily. My mum has had problems in the past with itchy CKCS which was attributable to two things - the food they were given (too high in protein, swapped to another brand and things were better) and cheyletiella (bl**dy hell I have just googled and I spelt it right

) which was sorted with Frontline
 
I have voted yes/yes. B (German Shepherd) is allergic to tree pollen and has food allergies which affect his ears, and his underside from his throat down through his stomach and his inner arms and thighs.

Treated with steroids, Malaseb, aloe vera gel, Epiotic, antihistamines.

Was not happy with local vets but went to a larger practise and happy with their treatment.

I have also switched him to a raw diet, which I hope will improve things.
 
Buddy my Lab. Have now switched him to hypoallergenic kibble. He doesnt worry his paws its mainly his belly he rubs along the floor and his arm pits he licks and all round his man bits

Wash him with Malaseb when i can. The things i have tried adding to his food are: aloe vera juice, omega oil, brewers yeast and even horses stop itch herbal supplement. All to no avail.
We will be going to the vets if i can figure it out. Its calmed down alot now the weather is cold though i have to say. I have a strong feeling his allergy is grass or straw, both of which living on the yard i cannot avoid at all.
 
Stella, Boston terrier. She did have hives once, which was attributable to a spider bite, but ordinarily she has no skin issues, no matter what diet she has been fed. For the past four years she has been getting a fresh-cooked, organic blend made by my local pet store. I add flax oil to this, which makes her coat lovely and shiny.

Prince the pug, apparently, has minor skin issues (a little itchy, but no hair loss, redness on paws etc.) but I am convinced that will clear once we get him onto a good food.
 
My GSD and sheltie x have problems in the summer with mites and stuff and the Sheltie had a real itchy problem and it was down to anal glands! it must have made her feel under the weather as its as though she has a new lease of life now they are sorted

Yes, Bogle my pug was all itchy under his armpits, belly and areas of thin skin!! He was quite spotty too. Lots of tests later it turned out to be to do with his thyroid as a side effect of his medication for epilepsy. Melasab to be begin with and thyroxin tablets seem to keep it under control.
 
I have a Newfoundland and she is on a monthly desensitizing vaccine. She still itches and flare-ups are treated with either a short course of antihistamines, or steroids (rarely). She also has epiotic and her ears cleaned regularly as that is one of her hot spots (plus between her toes which she will lick for hours given the chance). She is on a James Wellbeloved diet.

My vet is brilliant, very supportive, but at the end of the day the condition is 'managed' and is a significant financial commitment (astronomical insurance renewal premium recently as some will recall).

She is the most loved dog and worth every penny I hasten to add.

I have a jrt , now 18 yrs old ( bday 12 Dec. ) who has been itchy for the past 14 yrs . Has had many , many tests over the years . I answered yes to both questions though that is not strictly true . I know he is allergic to grass and I also have to be careful with cleaning products . For example I wash the hall and kitchen floor tiles with washing up liquid as floor cleaners can irritate even when I rinse with clean water . But he is allergic to so much more and has had many tests over the years .
 
Daisy is allergic to life! she is allergic to grass, trees pollen etc strange though she isnt allergic to housemites?? I had a special vaccine made and imported and had to jab her everyday which became a nightmare as she hated me!! So I went back to basics Ive given up with the Malaseb shampoo too. Now i feed her RC sensitivity diet and fresh chicken and she also get 1 capsule of evening primrose oil in her food daily as reccomended by my vet and it does the trick, she has a bath every fortnight and barely itches at all now.
 
Yes and Yes. Our Irish Setter who we had PTS just before Xmas suffered an itchy tummy a few years ago. We simply changed her diet and that solved the problem.
