Has anyone here ever bought a horse with someone else?

And I mean so you are both the owner, and you both ride and share the caring of it. Not if you have gone into business with someone and only one of you rides and cares for it

Just wanted to hear peoples experiences!

I wanted to buy two youngsters, one because it had potential...the other because I felt sorry for him and wanted to give him a better life.

The one with potential was a 14hh Welsh x New Forest, bright chestnut, a real character. He was never going to be of any real use to me but I really liked him. So, we offered the seller a deal for the pair of them and got a friend to pay for half of the Welsh x NF. She was experienced with horses and had ridden for many years but had never owned a horse before and wasn't 100% confident around youngsters, so we shared the work. She'd do most the mucking out (though, if she couldn't, I would)...I did most the training (of her and the horse!) which, once established, she'd start taking more involvement in.

When he was backed, she rode him...and she bought my share of him as a 4 year old.

All in all, a pleasant experience!!

I think the most important thing to point out with my experience is that it was a very small amount of money involved (we got the horses for £600 the pair! Her 'investment' was only £200).

I'd known her since i first started school.

We knew our role! She knew she had less confidence and experience, I knew I had no long term plans with the horse!

In contrast, I shared a horse with someone (paid share...owned by a Livery yard, the cost was split between two of us) We were complete strangers and didn't see eye to eye about who should be doing what (though, we were about 13 at the time!)

As long as you know and trust the person, and have everything in writing (...who paid how much, who is responsible for X, Y, Z...how riding gets shared, competing, vet bills, insurance...and how owns what? If you buy something for the horse, such as a new rug or bridle...does it become the horses or stay as yours? EVERYTHING needs to be listed and agreed so no one can argue anything!!) then there's no reason it shouldn't be enjoyable!

i brought a youngster with a friend to bring on and sell.

the horse was kept on my yard, a so they thought they didnt need to contribute in costs, i rent the yard, have to by hay, straw, feed, wormers etc.

i did like him but wasnt really what i would have brought if looking on my own, other person got fed up an i ended up looking after him all the time, then they arrived on day saying they had money problems and needed me to buy them out. so ended up with a horse i didnt really want anyway.

i would be very very carful if i did it again, in fact i think there are only two people i would consider doing it with, one of them we were recently going to buy a stallion together but it fell through. just be very carefull have everything in writting what will happen if one decides they dont want to share anymore etc. or doesnt contrubute to costs, how you will work out who rides what days, an shows etc if you want to compete in future.

I have never owned a horse with someone else but i haved loaned with another girl.

It was bladdy horrible. We used to fight every time we saw each other. We were both young and i loaned the pony first then the owner (who i was very close to) thought it would be a good idea to get another girl in to help me out. BIG MISTAKE!!!
I would'nt share again.

I almost did before I bought my mare. In the end I decided that too many problems could arise form it and bought a cheaper horse I could afford on my own

I have bought almost all my horses in life with my twin sister. We share them well. It makes life easier if you want to go away for a weekend and there is someone to do them.

We are very close though and get on, so its easy.

I have and its working out well. We share all the bills between us and share the riding, although for the past few weeks I have done slightly better.
My friend does not want a full time commitment to the horse and I have another horse that I share with my husband so in theory there is always someone to go riding with.

We both do the horses at 6.30 in the mornings and then me and OH do them on an evening. Sharer was away for Christmas so I looked after them and we went away for New Year and she looked after them, so no livery bills. We have an agreement that if it doesnt work out then one can buy the other out.

I bought a very cheap section A yearling colt from melton Mowbray sales. I was with my friend and mother in law and we paid half each for him, which was the grand sum of £15... yes he was £30!!

We kept him at her house, which is where I lived too. I paid for his hay and feed and when he was gelded she paid for that.
I then split up with my ex (her son) and moved away, She said that I could have Bryn and not to worry about giving her half of the money, as she didn't think he was any good anyway!

I kept him until he was 4 then backed him and he went on loan to a wonderful PC family who kept him for 3 years. When the girls had ougrown him I put him up for sale and he was looked at, vetted and gone within a week.

I sold him for £2500, not a bad profit!!
