Following on from my last post have you ever bought a horse that was not the most attractive you have ever seen and they turned out to be a real cracker?
Sadly no pics as my computer is up the spout and have non on this one... but brought a 15hh coloured mare 4yrs ago who was UGLY 9inch of bone a massive head with stupidly big ears but no body!! And she was ment to only brood mare- ''unrideable'' the seller said!! any way very long story, she still has the head, bone and ears which every one laughs at her for
but the middle bit has grown, and she has turned out to be AMAZING she has won a couple of Foxhunter classes, events at Int / 1* and is the best hunter in the world.
I dont think I will ever ride another horse like her- she has the heart of a lion!!!!
i brought a foal when i went to pick another one i brought up (thanks rachelnjj) he was not ugly but very plain ! 5 years later he is the most lovelist sexist stallion !
End of summer (good grass and conditioning feed!):
My last horse (no photos) was worth less than £1000 when we bought him, but we were offered £10,000 for him after 2 years - but he was something v.special, completely neglected, stood knee-high in his own filth covered in matts, dreadlocks and sores, but an absolute dream movement and jumper. He was an AA - so had a very pretty dish face, but big strong muscles.
Ugly ducklings are brilliant cause they're so much cheaper
Pip - fresh out of some racing hellhole in Newmarket where he had never been turned out in his life, never seen grass and was thoroughly depressed. He spent 3 months in one corner of a field unable to believe his luck.
This was at the opening meet for the draghounds earlier this year.
Found this sorry looking 2 year old young man at a well known dealing yard, they delivered him and he came off the lorry with cuts all over him, bite marks, blood running down his head, a fat knee, fat fetlock and as thin as a rake. We only bought him as we felt sorry for him
He turned out to be a little superstar. He was far too cheeky to ride for me so I loaned him out (to the girl riding him) for a year and then she has since bought him.
She has worked wonders with his ridden work and is now successfully doing BE and BSJA.
The yard I'm a livery on brings on youngsters and the transformations are unimaginable - it's entirely thrown my way of thinking about horses as these ugly, awkward things turn into the most talented and gorgeous horses imaginable!
Really has taught me that there is a huge amount more to horses than the initial impression.
