Have you ever dye your boots??

Has anyone ever dyed a pair of brown boots? I hate the colour of mine (they are a bright tan colour) I want to dye them a mahogany ish colour.
Is there something I need to strip them down with first? What would be the best dye to use? What dyes have you used or should I avoid?
PS I have already tried the polish - it looks awful!!!!!!

No need to dye them just give them several coats of Nic Wax and they will darken and helps with waterproofing
