Have you ever had a horse you "can't" ride?

Feeling a bit peed off with myself tonight. I just cannot ride Peter (Huge WB, only had him a few weeks)! I am ok until I try and jump. I just cannot get to grips with him. His huge back end kicks out and I go forward and loose contact. I am soooo cross with myself! Has anyone else had a horse they find 'difficult' to ride or is it just me? Have to say, feel a bit crap about it all at the moment, he is just too much horse for me. x

Yes, I have, my youngster at 3.5 years. He had a big stride and a big trot and I would hold him back because i didn't have the necessary skill and balance to let him stride out properly. I was nervous because I could feel he could cover the ground and really fly.
I had him mincing along, not tracking up!!!
Just as well I had to sell him following my accident as I am sure I would have ruined him and made him miserable.
He was too much horse for me.
Sad to say I know my limitations now.

dont give up.. and when you feel like this.. dont ride him... it will make your both more tense and that lack of 'togetherness' will get worse!

He's a lovely horse and you've only had him a few weeks. Stop beating yourself up!

You saved him from an uncertain fate and that's the most important thing at the moment.

Give the jumping a rest. Go for long hacks. Chill out. It will come! Good luck with him!

dont give up! when i first had tabs she had not been ridden for 12 months and was mental she used to bugger off with me all the time canter was very expolsive (not much has changed lol) and she used to buck alot
i had times where i thought about sending her back
after a few months i realised that she needed working regularly (no less that four times a week) and she started to calm down slightly as we got to know each other know we both trust each other and get on fine (well most of the time)
i remember jumping her for the first time OMG i s**t myself she went absolutely went mental and threw herself at it i just carried on jumping and scaring myself and got used to how she approaches jumps etc and i found that i needed someone on the ground telling me to get over them
good luck

Yep

,had my lad yrs,but we have only really started jumping properly this yr and i have the same problem,he jumps everything soooo big as he is novicy to,have gone smaller until i can get to grips with him, lol!!
A few wks is not enough time for you to get to grips....as you get to know each other it will all fall into place!Dont let this dishearten you...loads of practice and patience and it will come

lots of gridwork so he has more than one fence to concentrate on

Get a good instructor. Even if you know what you should be doing, sometimes it takes a lesson with someone good to help you figure out how to do it!

If you meant me, I totally agree. Sadly, the YO is also my instructor and boss, so I'm stuck.
Oddly, I can ride MY horses just fine.

Dont worry, it will come. In the meantime, get yourself someone good on the ground and do SMALL grids to start with , let your horse have his head and get yourself a neck strap for now.
Looks like a super honest horse and very handsome

It will come in time

You are still very new to one another and it can take a while to 'gel' with a new horse, no matter how sweet he/she is. You'll get there

You haven't had him very long so don't worry about it! I am only just staring to make progress with K now and I got him in Feb.

I also do the same with my hands jumping & don't give him enough and he does a huge jump. I find it very frustrating and get very cross with myself. All it takes is practice, practice, practice!

Good luck! It will be fine!

Yes, to a degree.

Before I got Be, the other winter, I was borrowing my friend HUGE WB to hack out. I'm 5'3" and he is 18hh

I struggled to tack him up and mounting him was a right challenge - I couldn't even get a leg up and had to climb on the top of a gate to ride him. Quite simply, he really is a mans ride - huge horse, huge stride and huge buck

Neither of the girls on their hunting/racing yard, who have jockey licences would ride him after coming off him as they didn't want to risk injury and not being able to work.... I was ok hacking him out. Quite happy on the roads, trotting, jumping little logs etc, but he was too big for me - his stride was too big; I never felt right, and ironically after a right fight getting him over a log I was jumping, I let my guard down as I was trotting away and turned to look at my mother jumping Star over it - he bucked, I came off on my knee, and it's been a bit squiffy ever since....

I got back on him and rode him home and rode him again, but I don't think I could ever do much with him - he is V V definitely a man's ride. My friend who owns him (well built, 6' bloke) who has hunted plenty is admittedly too nervous to do enough with him and his best friend is the only one I know who can *really* ride him and he hunts him etc and everything

Mind you, he grew up working for an Olympic event rider...
