came across this last night my boy is still itching so thought worth ago. just done it but a load of wasps came around him and me, i sprayed with fly spray and they left was going to wash straight off, but want to see if it will help. keeping a close eye on him, he seems itchy so might go back out and wash him of and just use the botanic wash, but then he is itchy so it might just take a few days to work with the vingar, i have tried everything and he still itching. so thought it was worth ago. have you tried this??

what works for you?

if it is sweet itch then I don't see how it would work tbh? - skin has an acidic ph anyway so the vinegar isn't going to make much difference. Since sweetitch is an allergy to midge bites then you need to prevent the midges from biting in the first place, a sweetitch rug on 24/7 before the start of the season right to the end is the easiest, cheapest and most sucessful method.
Does your boy have sweet itch or is there another reason for his itchyness?

vet said it wasnt classic sweet itch as was out in bumps at start and from head to hoof but we have tried everything. want to get rug but he has a few boils so vet said need air at them. i know it sounds mad but thought was worth ago. also dont want to just put a rug on want to sort the itching as well, as he will just itch through the rug.
at min hosing twice aday and washing with botanic and warm water he loves that, also flax oil added to food, which you can see the shine on him already. but he is still itching. also fly spray 3-4 times aday.

Poor chap, sounds sore. Even if it isn't classic sweet itch (my vet said the same, but my mare rubbed herself to shreds when she wasn't rugged when I first got her - as i had no idea she had sweetitch symptoms, now she is rugged march - end oct 24/7 and has no symptoms - go figure!) if biting flys are causing his problems then you still need to stop the cycle. A sweetitch rug will still allow his skin to breath, while preventing flys from doing more damage. If his skin is already damaged then I don't think I would use vinegar - get some in a cut and tell me what you think! Perhaps try a soothing shampoo to get the grot out of his coat, and then try and protect him from future problems? I use this on my mare as even with her rug she is prone to being itchy (coat change/warm weather/general grubbyness/fly spray etc all makes her worse) and it doesn't irritate her sensitive skin http://www.barrier-biotech.com/product.php?pid=AIS

Can your vet not suggest something to help? All very well saying what it isn't, but what is it and what can they do for him? Would something like an antihistimane help at all?

thanks a million for tips. vets just say give another does of antibodics and wash with botanic and fly spray. no cure it sounds. he is rubbing bum tail on ground so hope his hocks dont start swelling. i measure him the other day want to get him a rug with neck, he has never worn one before so hopefully he doesnt mind it. but dont know what to get as fly rug not waterproof, as its nearly september maybe i should get a medium turnout rug or is it too warm for that yet. he lives out 24/7 as will just rub raw if in and he prefers out. he measure 68 inchs everyone saying get a 6'0 rug but he is only 2 1/2 would he get away with a 6'3. what you think, will be ordering online as local tack shop a complet rip off and i mean rip off. which rug and size would you think, i know hard to say. thanks for reading.

I'd get a 6'3'' - pretty much the only thing you can be sure of is that he will grow! You can stick a lightweight sheet over it if need be with the weather drawing in. My mare will be fully clipped, but has her sweetitch hoody on until the end of oct, I just put her turnout on over the top if she needs it. I find her being 'warm enough' actually makes it worse, she is happier being on the cooler side. For that reason I wouldn't rug him with anything other than a lightweight unless he def needs it. If he has his full coat and has the wind and rain kept off as necessary then he should do just fine until it gets a decent bit cooler, and maybe even all winter if he is a native.

I wonder if aloe vera gel on his tail might take some of the heat and itch out of it, or maybe calomine lotion? At least neither should hurt broken and sensitive skin.

If he rubs his bum, could he have pin worm?

These sheets look good value for £?

hi,
pony can i just say you are brilliant. thank you so much, his skin isnt broken on tail or mane, but rubbed. he has few boils on outside of neck and rump. he only started sitting like a dog and rubbing bum. hence rubbing hocks, has me worried there too. i have him doubled wormed just in case, so not worms, but good thinking. the 2 links you added is brilliant vaule. thank you, i thnk i will go for link 2 as pic of link 1 seems awful over size rug. for his 1st rug i think rug 2 will do the job. what you think, going to go for 6'3 might as well could maybe stich if bit big. price is brilliant. thanks a million, aleo vera i might give a try, i will try anything.

aw, shucks!
Really hope you find something to help, it is so hard when we want them to be comfy but the professionals aren't able to help. Taken over 2 years to get a full mane and tail on my mare, each horse is so individual with getting them sorted.
Best of luck and keep us updated!

Just a note of caution - this contains benzyl benzoate, this shouldn't be applied to broken skin. It is also a skin irritant. Just worth bearing in mind. The whole bloomin' thing is just a minefield!

It's a shame that benzyl benzoate is being avoided by some people in case it is an irritant. It's one of the gentlest substances you can get and features largely in sudocrem and other baby creams. It's only when bought and used undiluted by people who think the stronger the better. You need the correct % and then it's brilliant for sweet itch and harmless.
