have you ever viewed a horse on your own?

i have a viewing at the weekend to actually.... my ideal horse. but i need my friend to come with me as i am a "saw it, liked it, bought it" kinda girl.

So, im bribing the vast majority of my non horsey friends just for moral support if nothing else. but im stuck

I am going, whether im alone or with a friend. But have you lot ever viewed horses on your own?

I generally would make a decision there and then :o well you just know dont you whether its the one for you or not?
 
I used to take my mum but since I left home I've been to look at three on my own. All the people I was buying from told me to go away and think about it so I probably just got lucky as I'm like you and would take them straight home if I could. I did end up with all of them!
 
Yes I've viewed lots on my own; had one on trial as a result. When I'd ridden the horse at the vendors place, I'd ridden it out in a snaffle, plain and simple, yet when it came to me on trial it was fitted up with a Kimblewick!! So be wise!! Some unscrupulous people will try to pull at your heartstrings if they see you're on your own and haven't got a "friend" to talk you out of it; this happened to me at two rather dubious dealers yards where they figured that coz I was on my own I hadn't got a clue what I was doing.

So be wise!!! IF you think you might be tempted if you haven't got anyone there to talk you out of it, then I'd perhaps think about waiting till you can get someone rather than worry about making a rash decision, its all too easy to get landed with the wrong horse.
 
Yup, I now normally go for a first viewing on my own. My husband and daughter have a woeful record of falling in love with the first horse they see so it's far easier if I pick out a suitable one and then let them see it!
 
:D have always been to ist viewing on my own then, if i think its the one for me, taken friend/trainer along as a second opinion it seems silly to drag other people to see horses that can, quite often, be completely wrong or not as advertised so i have always tried to weed out these first so im only wasting my own time... hope this helps..:D:D
 
In the past, frequently.

More recently I often only see horses I have bought when they step off the trailer here, but I do trust my partner in crime and he hasn't found a bad one for us yet.

I have done this with all the horses I have viewed.:D

I very much know my own mind and have bought all my horses on gut instinct. I went to view Baz on my own and knew there and then I wanted him - think the girl selling him thought I was a bit crazy when I handed over a deposit within 30 minutes!! :D

That said, I've never spent a huge amount on a horse - if I did I might be more inclined to get a second opinion. So far though, I've never regretted a single horse I've bought.
 
I pretty much always view on my own, am pretty confident with my own judgement of a horse for what I have bought in the past.

I do forsee making an expensive purchase over the next year or so, and in that instance won't make a decision there and then. Will either take trainer back for second viewing or get some really good video clip for trainer to view.
 
I did when i was 18 many many years ago I viewed her rode her and paid the full price £335 there and then and collected her the next day!! I had her for 21 years. My second one I took a friend and my horse now I viewed on my own on friday 13th but went back with my trainer.

Not literally by myself, but as my children were young at the time, I might as well have been! Found a horse on Horsemart 5 minutes from our house. Went along, found it was a rescue case, bought it following day. There was no way he'd pass a vetting, I couldn't try him, I knew nothing of his history but got suckered in by those liquid brown eyes imploring "help me". He turned out to be the sweetest, most genuine horse I've ever owned, and I couldn't be without him. If I'd taken anyone along and they'd given me their honest opinion, they'd have definitely warned me not to buy a horse with such a sketchy past and not to be so stupid. Lucky I didn't!!! :)
 
Yes, but wouldn't again, but not for opinions on the horse!

I viewed one years ago and the guy was a total twit, to begin with he asked me to help put on his full length chaps because he couldn't manage the zip - I didn't,he said I love riding behind you because I can watch your bum in your jods and then when we got back to yard his mum came out and said "how did it go, we're looking for a wife for ****. :mad:

The horse was meant to be £1500 and the guy kept hinting that I'd sleep with him, when I told him where to go the price went up to £3000!!

When I told my vet about this guy he said that if I'd told him where I was going he wouldn't have let me go as the guy was well known for it!!

That was the last time I ever went to view a horse on my own, made me rrealise what a vulnerable position I'd put myself in.

that sounded scary!!!! :o

i think id have smacked him on tbh lol!

think thats my main worry too tbh! the yards im vewing at i dont know where theya re etc - relying on sat nav - except the next viewing where i know were to go....

but im lucky that one non horsey friend has agree to come with me if needed - so at least i wont be alone. :)

After that I never went alone again, the guy is still around aswell, still unmarried but thinks he's a ladies man, it was 18 years ago when I had the run in with him!

i will take a non horsey friend with me (i asked him after you told me this lmao!) next time rather than no-one at all

im not scared of meetingpeople etc, im very confident but buying ahorse is a massive deal that i cant mess up...
 
I am a first time buyer and I just take my dad to begin with, then if i see a horse i really like, i take my instructor - because i dont want to waste his time for a first veiwing if i the horse is not for me.
I occasionally bring my one horsey friend but a vast majority of the time not.

yeah - when i was a first time buyer i took my parents same with the 2nd.

this time though im on my own (buying and finding somewhere etc)! daunting but exciting

i actually hate horse hunting. i just would rather the horse found me so i don thave to go looking lol
 
I would take someone with you for safety rather than anything else. Its like viewing houses. You have no idea who is going to be there.
 
Nope never always have been with my mum and 1 or 2 horsey friends as they can get on and see what they think of the horse especially if they are experienced
You could take your instructor if you have one
 
If you view the situation as you are being competent and rational enough to be able to assess whether the horse is right for you, then go on your own if you can't find a friend.

From a personal safety point of view I'd say take someone. I recently viewed a horse with a friend that was in Oxfordshire. We only had a mobile number and were told to meet up with the owner in a village car park as the yard was hard to find. We met up and then followed the owner in their car as we were driven for what seemed like miles down very narrow lanes and then onto a farm track to get to a very isolated yard with no mobile phone signal.

Then we thought about it afterwards, in what other circumstances would you contact someone you didn't know, often on a mobile number, from an ad off a website and then drive off into the isolated middle of nowhere to meet up with them.........? It's ok if you know the yard, the vendor and the area but would you do it if it wasn't to view a horse?
 
ruby - yeah my mum has offered to come with me (non horsey does not want to know etc) which i mega apprecaited as its just my safety im bothered about!

for the respect of "if the horse is right" im more than capable ot knowing that. for lameness etc - borderline - hence now vetting - however my friend whos coming tomorow is good for physical signs of lameness and issues.

looking forwadd to this viewing :)
