Hi
Having had horses for 21 years now, with only 1 year break, i am wondering now wether to give up owning my own and just go back to riding school and lessons..worry free riding! i'm a happy hacker and dont go competing or anything, my horses live out 24/7, in a fab place by a forest, but i am 36 with a family and young children and fitting time in for a ride can be a pain in between lameness, school holidays etc etc etc.. i've ridden only 5 times this year due to one thing or another, and beginning to wonder wether its time to move on. I still love riding and my horses... one is a youngster which i cannot ride for another 2 years... I'm not sure wether i'm still doing it as thats all i know and its a habit more than anything if you know what i mean..

I think what i'm asking is.. have you given up owning and have you regretted it or now love not having the responsibilty anymore...

I gave up owning after 12years - I lasted a year and was miserable as sin! I regretted it as soon as my horse left the yard, even though I could still ride other peoples horses it wasn't the same. That said, if that's how you feel maybe a break would do you good?

I lost my old boy two months ago and miss riding so much. I've got 33 acres and stables all sitting here doing nothing but can't afford to buy another one yet because am embroiled in legal battle to regain possession of a rented property and legal bills have to come first sadly. I'd give anything to have another horse but it's not to be right now unfortunately.

I had been riding and had my own horse for years, alomg came the children and time became a nightmare to manage, I finally made the decision to part company with my filly and mare, one I have regretted ever since, I am now on the hunt for a replacement and boy is it hard, I am hoping that my children are at an age where they can become involved and help muck out and grooming as they tried to do when they were a little younger.

My horse was PTS in 2001 after 14 happy years. I didn't get another as I was splitting up with the ex and moving house. I found other hobbies that filled in the time and the money went on other things. I can't say I don't miss it - I miss him terribly even now but I'd not get another one in a hurry. I enjoy the freedom I have (essential for my job) and I can't imaging finding the money again. Like you say there are always riding schools and other horses to play with. Maybe one day when I have the time and money I'll get another one.

I lost my first horse in 2003. Was so sad I backpacked around the world for a year! When I got back I decided the sensible thing would be just to ride friends horses and have lessons, but it just wasn't the same. Am now back in the shackles of horse ownership, and couldn't be happier

i had 3 years away from the horses as had damaged my back in a car accident. i was sooooo bored and gave in and got back in the saddle!!, was as sore as anythin at first but realised that was well worth the pain being around my horses again!!.............i tried helping out with friends but it was not the same as having own.i lasted 3 weeks before buying my own!!!!! i had surgery on my knee recently and was riding before i could walk properly!!!!!!!!

I gave up for a year or two when I was 18 and no I never missed them at all after the initial twiddling of thumbs. I found it fantastic to be able to do what I liked, when I liked ...... the freedom of not having horses for the first time in years was amazing.

But then I became sucked back in again LOL!! I haven't had a break from them for over 20 years now and I doubt I'll ever be rid of them for at least another 20 or 30 years

Ah BH, it's always different when a horse dies

. The choice was taken out of your hands and when you aren't ready to give them up it hurts because you miss them so much.

I had a break for 15 years after my beloved Blue was PTS. I had another horse afterwards but it was never the same so she was sold.

I've now owned Ty for a year now and I have to say that I can't imagine life without him! x
