I hope you don’t mind me placing this here as it isn’t strictly news (although it may be soon...). I didn’t want this survey disappearing too quickly as I want as many people to see and respond as possible.

The questions are directed at employers/self employed or those with some form of management responsibility who work in the horse industry - in the broadest sense. So that will include everyone who makes their living from horses – including the obvious – riding schools/livery yards/tack shops – and the not so obvious – those who work in offices or organise events and the other ones that I can’t think of!

Employers, the self employed and managers are mentioned as they would be expected to know about RIDDOR and possibly report under it. Other members of staff would not normally be required to know about RIDDOR (although it may be desirable).

If you’re confused see: http://www.hse.gov.uk/riddor/index.htm

Have you any questions or comments you would like to make about RIDDOR? If so please put them in this thread.

Thanks for your help – rest assured it will be helpful.

Do you think this applies to people voluntarily building XC fences etc ie non paid activities without which most events would not run?
If your privately owned and kept horse kicks the farrier/vet and causes injury would the owner be obliged to report this to RIDDOR?
If I pay a joiner to work on my private (non-business) premises and he is injured am I obliged to report the incident?

As a private person you have no duties under RIDDOR.

It is possible in this situation that the event organiser would have to report the incident as they do have a duty to ensure employees and volunteers safety.

In these incidents no you as a private person would have no duty to report but it is likely that farrier, vet or joiner would have to report the accident as it happened during the course of their work.

COSHH might also be useful...given the prevalence of 'bute lying around in tack rooms.

Thanks Sarah
Trying to think hypothetically but this legislation does kind of creep up--whatever did we do before somebody invented all this!
