I am looking for a WH or VSD style saddle to fit new pony ( 16.5" wide) & am interested in an Arabesque & a Nathaniel Underwood but I have never heard of these! Can anyone enlighten me? Plenty of what I am looking for on Preloved & ebay but how do you know if you've picked the 'right' one when you can't try on pony?

I have heard of Nathaniel Underwood saddles, but not seen any of the saddles, but reports on them are very good.

I have a nathaniel underwood dressage saddle. It's gorgeous and very well made. Styled a lot like the Albion slk. It's a 17" though. (And for sale).

I don't know Arabesque saddles, Nathaniel's are decent quality. What I would say is, if you're asking how you'll know it fits, then I'd recommend you work with a saddle fitter. It's not rocket science but equally there are a ton of variables in fitting a saddle and it's very easy to get it wrong and to really cause problems, which can be very expensive to put right. Much better to invest a little now in the services of a fitter, than to have to pay for vet, physio and another better fitting saddle further down the line.

Thanks everyone. I have had a saddler measure pony & advise what to look for but I can't find anything suitable locally that I could try on / sit in. I've also had the physio as saddle used by previous owner gave her a sore back. Anyone bought a saddle without trying it & it didn't fit? Were you able to re-sell without losing money?

Nathaniel's saddles are great, really good quality. Older ones are very similar to Ideal's, but I think now he has a team working for him? He just took my dressage saddle from my old horse (which was one of his) to sell on my behalf as it will never fit my new mare, and altered the jump saddle to fit her.
