Have you suffered from a broken pelvis and how long recovery?

Hi, I fractured my pelvis (Pubic Ramus) last wednesday evening from a rotational fall. I spent 3 days (2nights) in hospital and was discharged with strong painkillers, crutches and physio appointments. Now i'm quite a stubborn person and as i have an office job i decided to head straight back to work yesterday even though the doctor was going to sign me off for 3 weeks, i am walking fine with my crutches and the pain has reduced massively. I am wondering how long people were until they got back in the saddle?

I have had two friends fracture their pelvis; one I'm not sure of but it was months before she was back in the saddle, having been in bed for at least a month. The other did it in August and was back riding in December - three fractures.

Either way, if you are up and about a week later, then you are lucky, and doing better than either of them did at that stage!

I am feeling hopeful for a speedy recovery, my aim is another 8 weeks off from riding. This is the second time i have fractured my pelvis, the first time was quite a few years ago and again i recovered quickly. I am in the process of breaking my youngster in (not the horse i had the fall on) so i would like to get him backed and turned away before the end of summer.

I had two fractures in my pelvis following a car accident. I had many other injuries and spent a week in intensive care, then another nine day on a hospital ward before being allowed to go home.

I was told not to walk or weight bare on my legs... but after a week, I did start shuffling around the house. It didn't hurt as long as I was mindful of the injuries :)

Riding wise it took a bit longer - I felt ok but my Dr insisted that I did not get back on until he said. Was out of the saddle for 3 months. When I did get back on, I could only do short hacks out - it felt uncomfortable, trotting especially so. The most difficult bit was dismounting - I found it really difficult to lean forward on my pelvis and swing my leg over to get off. I had to have two helpers - one to hold the horse and the other to help me swing my leg over! In the end, I found it easier to bring my leg over the horse neck then just slip down to the ground - with someone there to catch me :)

This was over 10 year ago. Apart from a few aches and pains, I'm fine now - business as usual. Don't rush getting back on and take the advice of your doctor. Good luck x

i broke my pelvis on 26th March this year, i have been fully active for several weeks now with no pain etc. so i was happily back in the saddle on my hubbys cob after 6 weeks. shame my mare went lame during tha time and still is. cob is very wide, but no problem for pelvis

Yes like you I was in and out in 3 days, even with the addition of 2 broken ribs and a cracked vertebra. Went back to work in 3 weeks but wasn't comfortable for several more, my legs gave way if I tried to walk too far, most embarrassing. Broke pelvis over an August BH and was dismissed from hospital monitoring in 1st week of Oct. Back in saddle shortly thereafter, sorry can't remember exactly when. It was a bit painful mounting but comfortable when in saddle, probably 'cos horse threw me backwards and thus I landed in a dying ant position.
Have almost always worn a back protector since that time as the grass might as well have been concrete that day and a similar fall a year later merely winded me, so well worth wearing.
Hope you feel better soon and keep taking the Ibuprofen.

Well, I did mine after my quirky boy launched me coming back into work after time off (same bone) . . . however, I toughed it out (not a good thing) and walked/hobbled round Tweseldown the next day, continued to do stairs, mucked out, etc. and it wasn't until weeks later when I was still in agony that I was diagnosed and by then I had done enough damage to mess me up pretty much permanently. I now have snapping hip syndrome, and it has taken me two years (give or take) to not be crippled if I spend too much time on my feet (I haven't ridden for a good nine months).

Caveat: I am in my late 40s.

I find that the worst thing is sleeping, I hate sleeping on my back and i wake up at all hours in discomfort. I am not taking the painkillers i was prescribed as i am a nightmare and will try do too much if i don't feel pain. So i take ibruprofen and paracetamol if i need to. its been 1 week since my fall and the pain is much better, i can actually sit up and stand on a morning without painkillers. Fingers crossed it continues to improve so quick!

This makes me happy :-) i really want to be back riding, especially whilst the weather is good!
Glad you had a good quick recovery, hopefully your mare will be sound soon too!

Hi. I haven't broken my pelvis but I has a pelvic osteotomy when I was 16 (18 years ago) and it was 6 months recovery. They cut straight through my pelvis and muscle so I had to rebuild the muscle on that leg.

I couldn't ride for 6 months and the bone took longer to heal than was expected but I had pins and plates in my hips - I think with a fracture it will be more unstable?

Anyway, good luck with your recovery. Take it easy and don't rush it :) xx

Oh gosh that sounds painful :-/
I am trying to ake it steady but im so stubborn and get bored very easily! I'm using my crutches and will continue to do so until the pain eases when i put weight on my left side.
I hope you recover soon!
