........had your Lorry weighed?

Just curious really as to how many of you actually know if your lorries are the correct weight or not?

Mum took ours to be weighed this morning and it came in at 6240 which i was quite shocked about as i thought it would be less. Its only a year old, so was built with light weight materials as opposed to wood. It was sold to us as a 4horse with living. The most we have ever carried is 2horses, and i think we wouldve been pushing the weight limit then.........

We've also removed one partition as we didnt need it, so even with that removed its still 6240.

We will only be travelling one horse in it now anyways, and only ever travelled 2 a couple of times. However it made me think how many people think they are underweight when i fact they arent?

I had to give up a lorry I bought as a 3.5 tonne and I was told I could legally put 2 horses on it with a car license, it weighed 3.5 unladen though!!

My new one weighs 2something...

Mine is a 3.5ton and was weighed with a person and all equipment in and was 2.5ton I think. I personally didnt weight it, but the person I brought it from did!!

Yep! But I brought it just for my horse anyway. 95% of the 3.5tons will only legally take one big horse....and some are hard pushed for that!!

Mine is 5.5 tonnes unladen so thats fine, it was done at its last MOT so I have the print out somewhere. I believe that many 7.5 are coming in at just over 6 unladen, you have to be so careful.

I was looking at one lorry inparticular and discovered that unladen it weighed just under 3.5 so with one small horse in it you would be over the weight on a car license! I really liked it too... (think of my trailer but a box

)

So I am now saving up to do my 7.5 tonne license but it's going to cost just under £1000 for lessons, putting in for the test etc etc.

kartb and bbmat what where your boxes?

I'v just bought a ford transit with box on back they're are all advertised as 3.5 tonne and @can be driven on a 17 yr old licence@
im only 21 so will be takinfg it straight to the weighing bridge to check it out it's stalled for 2 but i dont think it will get away with it but with limited funds its the best i could get...

if im over ill have to do my hgv (lgv is pointless mayaswell do hgv might need it in future)

but i dont see why i should! i understand this law but there should be substidised rates for horse owners and farmers ect!

two horses weigh approx 1.5 tonnes so you have to have a box under 2 tonnes!!

i couldnt care to be honest, i only brought it to travel one, and two at the most - which it could do if i didnt own two fatties

However as Bloss is no longer competing i have no need to travel two in it.

Also there is no way you could fit 4 horses in the back - at a push two horses and a pony, as the tack locker takes up some space in the back.

thats my next thing to pass my lorry test - ive got my provisional, im just skint so cant afford the lessons at the moment, and probably not until next year some time tbh.

Took ours a couple of weeks back as a friend who is a haulage contactor reckoned it would be 6-6.5t unladen

It is an old Bedford 10tonner, downrated to 7.5t, steel frame, GRP stick sided box with rubber floor. Partintioned for 3 but very wide partitions. Living is just basic 4 cupboards and saddle/bridle racks (don't need any more than that)

Was pleasantly suprised to find it weighed 4.78 with full tank of diesel and me and OH in it - so suprised we asked the guy to recheck it!

At least we know now we can take both horses out - that is if it manages to pass it's test on saturday - can't afford a new one! Fingers crossed everyone

Mine is stalled for 3 with well fitted living and came in at 5750kgs unladen when it was plated. We could carry 3 small horses or ponies legally but with my 2 biggies and all their clobber we're just about comfortable within our 7.5t limit

We looked around the baby (3 stall) Lehel at Hickstead last week and that seems to be on a longer chassis than ours and with a LOT more gadgetry on board...i'd love to know what that weighed empty

I know! I have brought this 3.5tonfor the time being, but if G grows any more we will be lorry hunting again! Am saving to do lessons for big box so can get a 5.5ton ideally.

gosh, how big are your horses? My 17'3 warmblood weighs just under 650, and my mare weighs the same (shes a 16'1 chunky cob).

Also you cant just drive your box over the legal weight on an HGV liscence - the box has a legal weight so it dosent get over laiden and dangerous.

You should allow approx 750kg per horse to take into account the horse, diesel, water, kit, rider/groom

mum weighed the lorry with everything apart from me and the horse aboard - it had a full water tank for sink, full diesel, all my tack, (the dogs!), full water tank for horses - so me and Archie combined are just short of 700kg. And as the lorry is at 6240 that brings us in at 6940 so plenty under.

Thats good then

I was merely pointing out that carmentlucy had been very sensible in her calculations of 1500kg for 2 horses.

Just sold my 3.5 ton, which was about as light as a 3.5 ton can be unladen; 2.2 ton. Fantastc little box it was too, took 2 large horses no problems at all.

Now I'm saving up for a bigger box and a new licence!!

Can you find boxes under this weight? My car weighs 1500kg and it's not exactly big!! (I'm 21 too and want to buy a box, as I need the parents to pull the trailer and they don't like doing it so I hardly ever get out anywhere

It was a Marlborough, here some piccies from the advert, but like I said it's now sold..

I must admit, when it was weighed it was completely empty and didn't have the partition in, so perhaps 2.2 is a little generous!

but still allot of money!!

i think it will be ok its being delivered tomorrow or thursday

your thoughts?

i dont have to put two horses in i only hav 1
