Quick question, if a horse has been used as a stallion will it take longer to heal and have more swelling than a horse which has not been used as a stallion if it was gelded.

I don't think so. My boy was gelded late (he was nearly 2) as he had been rescued and turned away by someone who was told he was too poor to cover her mares.

He had made a happy pass-time of jumping the 6ft hedge into her field of brood mares (who were having a year off from breeding) and managed to get 7 of them 'in the club'. Oops.

The vet gelded him in an operation at the surgery under very heavy sedation (lying down) rather than the usual standing up in a stable routine. He didn't take any longer to recover, but his veg were much larger than other young horses I have seen gelded (apparently they expand\matrue with use ). Think grapefruit sized rather than satsuma!

We had a six year old cut at the [racing yard], the trophies were the size of duck eggs, the head lad assured us that Real Jockeys need to have them sliced and fried for breakfast, they were on the menu [allegedly] next morning.
Horse went down within two hours of op [hemorrhage], but was saved by intravenous injection form a vet who was [thankfully] nearby.

It just depends on how big and how old.

The 4 year old who'd been used a bit didn't swell much at all.

However the 9 year old reacted a lot more.

We had an 18 yr old stallion done, same time as his 2yr colt son, there was no difference between the two and both healed up nice and quickly, but then we’ve only ever once had an older stallion gelded, so probably not enough to make a fair judgement compared to having colts done in the past.
