Hi. I know this sounds a bit naive, but I have decided to have my elderly mare put to sleep and I've never been through this before. Will the vet organise for her to be taken away etc? Do they bring an assistant - I just don't know. Am dreading it but know it is for the best. Thanks

I don't think they bring an assistant which them. I think they organize for them to be taken away on expense of the owner. Usually you get a choice of whether you'd like them pts in the stable or field and you have a choice to whether you wish to be there or not.
I'm sorry you're having to go through this difficult time. x x x

your vet will advise you of options available and should guide you. Remember they do PTS as part of their work. Mine told me of options and collection of body etc.If your horse is good at standing still and fine with the vet then it should be pretty straightforward. But lots of advice on here and I found the forum a great source of support and information when I was faced with the sad decision last year. But please feel free to pm me if you like. Its never easy making the decision but if you are thinking it, then its probably the right time etc. You just know its right, if that makes sense.

It depends on what you want done with the body. Your choices are basically having the body cremated, burying them or having them collected by the local hunt. The later depends on the method of euthanasia but the best thing would probably be for you to phone and have a chat with the vets about what they offer, you also have to be careful about where you bury if you go down that route as there are rules about it.

Very sorry for you but well done for taking a brave decision. Talk to your vet if they don't organise collection they will be able to give you the name of someone to talk to to arrange it.

They don't normally bring a helper but if you'd rather not be there is there a friend of YO that could be or I think BHS started a scheme where they can help with support.

As an alternative to the vet there will also be a local knackerman who will PTS and collect in one go - then cremate in a group.
