Having his op (arthroscopy) today

Following on to my previous post, my horse is in having his (2nd) stifle arthroscopy today - he was supposed to go in 10.30 - 11.00 so I am waiting with bated breath to hear the results at the moment.

When I dropped him off last night, the senior vet caught me before I left, and had a chat with me about what they were likely to find & prognosis. I left feeling much more positive than I had arrived - I had thought Best Case Scenario was 6-9 months box/paddock rest, then slowly bringing back into work to see if he was likely to come sound - it turns out this this is Worst Case Scenario instead.

Anyway, fingers crossed that the stifle joint/cruciate ligament is not completely trashed & that recovery will be better than I had thought.

hope all goes ok today i know its hard waiting i am a nurse in a practice so know its worrying for owners but i am exactly the same when it my horses, fingers crossed update us when you hear xx
 
Hi all, thanks for your kind thoughts. Sorry, I didn't get a chance to log back on yesterday with an update.

Well, it's not looking too good. He has torn his Meniscal (?) Ligament; they have tidied the area up and taken out all the debris. Coming back home Saturday morning, and then 10-14 days of box rest until he has his stitches out.

Then we're looking at minimum of 6 months paddock rest - at least he can be out which will make him happier - and fingers crossed that it heals.

Anyone had a similar injury? Star, how is your boy doing now - is he still lame at the trot?

Horses eh? Who'd have 'em?!
 
My boy had the same done in August, we have had a few ups and downs but he is now sound, and now letting him have more time out in the field, so we will hopefully not have any more set backs.

they thought Llewi had torn his meniscus before they went in with the arthroscopy but then discovered the cruciate problem. I think they both carry similar recovery programs and prognoses. If given enough rest then it's certainly possible for them to recover. Vets will only ever give a guarded prognosis for the injury as it's never a good thing to do and ligaments are rubbish at healing but I do think most injuries will heal if given enough time.

I spoke to my vet at Liphook about Llewi couple of wks ago now and he said it's not abnormal for them to feel a bit weird when they first start trotting under saddle after so long off and to just gently persist. We're now up to 10mins trotting and he feels much better. Occasional odd step but trying not to panic. Just taking it nice and easy - been trotting nearly 4wks now and should have been up to 20mins by now and starting canter work but we're happy taking it slow.
