I recently bought myself a 2.2ltr sports car one that I do like as I am also a petrolhead gal, BUT.. I am having to sell so soon as the cost of fuel and having a horse just do not agree with my bank balance currently and so one of them had to give..... no competition my horse stays!

I am going to get a 1.2-1.4 little 5 door car to pootle about in, as my job also entails me to do lots of little driving about and horse is a good 10miles away and in order to keep him where he is and give him what he needs I have to downsize.
Cost of fuel is too steep.

Just interested to know what cars you all drive and your reasons?

Petrol prices have gone through the roof hasn't it. I drive a 1.6 5 door astra & I love it. I needed a family type car as I have a little one & needed room. I put about £30 in & that lasts me about a week/just over :)

Sadly because of my work I have to have an estate car (you try fitting a stage piano, PA gear, band and other instruments into a Vauxhall Corsa... it doesn't work, I HAVE tried :D)

I have a focus estate which is better on fuel than previous estate cars I've had, but still wish I could get away with my old wee Vauxhall Corsa which seemed to only need filling up once a month. I do a lot of very long distance driving (regularly do 500+miles in a weekend) and then the round trip to the yard is about 18 miles I think.

The cost of fuel/increase in cost is really starting to worry me. I'm balancing a career as a working musician, a PhD, a horse, part-time work teaching music and as an artist but I'm still struggling to get enough money coming in. I don't know how I can take on more work and not jeopardise my studies. Sigh.

Still, something'll come up, it always does. :)

I have a 2.0l diesel vw tiguan. it's small enough that I don't have to worry about space but big enough to fling everything in the back.
horse is about 30 mins away so I do get through a lot of fuel but the consumption is around 35 so not too bad

I own a toytoa yaris 1 lt I love my little car :) goes quiet car on a tank and I find it easy to park because it's flat backed, small but very nippy, they come in higher liters but this was my first car so 1lt was fine cox me :)

I have a Fiat 500 for getting to and from yard. Amazing mileage, 60+ to gallon, and you would be surprised what you can get in back! I have a 4x4, parked mostly, for when I need trailer.

My brother and SIL picked up a nice little sports car that was about 12 months old, when the previous owner had to sell as it would not fit a baby seat. (Unplanned ).

I love my Nissan Navara, it does use a lot of diesel, but so far my OH pays the car bills. and the $5000 service fee for new clutch and tyres, (but he did complain a lot).

My OH has a Subaru Forester and the Subarus handle so nicely, they are one of the most enjoyable cars to drive. I do not get to drive it much though.

I've got a Disco 2L Tdi and a golf auto 1.8 - the golf is worse on fuel !! Way way way worse

ETA both cars are OLD ! don't have MPG calculators, golf is an E reg and the Disco is an N, I find it's better not knowing

wow wish I could fill up less often I go through £20 every 2-3 days which I think is a lot really, my insurance is also steeper than I'd really like at the moment and with xmas upon us... it has to give. :(

I'd like perhaps a little fiesta or peugeot 206 to keep things nice a cheap, I don't have a family as yet, so will only be for myself and hubby to use.
and get really messy winter with the horse lol :)

I have a subaru legacy gtb as my everyday car. Need something big enough to fit the Husky in the boot easily with all my other junk.

I only get 18-19 MPG! I can also tow with it but god it costs me a fortune. Its fast though :D I have done a couple of track days in it and boy can it shift!!

ive got a 2.2 petrol vectra, and by god it doesnt half guzzle the fuel :( its not running right at the min and i cant afford to fix it, so its a vicious(sp) circle as im desperate to sell and down size :( ive really no excuse as to why i have such a big car as OH has a navara which i can use to cart about big dirty objects lol

I've got a diesel Renault Clio - because at the time I bought it I was doing over 500 miles a week and needed something super efficient but also comfortable enough to spend a serious amount of time in.

Mine only costs £30 a year in tax and easily does over 50mpg, if I am careful it will do over 60mpg. There is a model that is more efficient than mine but I wanted the slightly speedier one.

I looked at the Seat Ibiza Ecomotive and the Polo Bluemotion but decided that they had compromised too much to get the fuel economy and that I couldn't live without things like electric windows and aircon but if I did less miles I might change my mind.

My clio is powerful enough to cruise in the fast lane, big enough to get four adults in and has a decent boot. With the back seats folded down I can get in five bales of shavings. It is also halfway cool..... the previous one I had was the sporty one which satisfied the petrolhead in me as it was quick and had the sports kit so looked the part, this one is less cool but not one you have to be ashamed of! It saves about 4mpg compared to the sporty one and about £100 a year in tax.

Only miss my sports car on "top down days" :(

only thing is I will be going from 200bhp to about 80bhp..... OUCH so will have to rethink the pulling away at junctions and roundabouts lol.

still having a little cheap car will do the job which is what its all about so I can keep my boy.
oh and having cheaper tax and insurance will be nice and save me about £100 in insuarance a month alone lol :)

I have a Ford KA. It was cheap to buy, cheap to insure, cheap tax etc. I put £20 petrol in every 10 days or so. It's a very cheap run a round and nice to drive. Quite spacey too! I take mine to car boot sales and manage to get everything in.

Well i have a corsa hardly do many miles but short journeys to yard and parents. I have to fill up atleast 30quid a week its rubbish on fuel about 20-22 mpg. Its only 4years old too. A 4x4 would be as good! Mine drinks petrol and i do think I'm a fairly economic driver! For record its a 1.4 petrol!

The price of fuel is a nightmare.

I have a 3.0ltr D range rover, I use that as our family car and to tow the horses. I also have a 3.0 ltr D BMW conv as my company car/family car in the summer, both cost me a fortune to run. However I am debating whether or not to sell or trade in the Range for a horse box but it wont be as flexible so going to wait till after new year and decide then.

My partner and I are car freaks! Iv got a Nissan navara which i love but getting another car also soon an Audi s5 cab, currently on order and being built to spec! My partners got an s4 and also a Nissan 350z cab. To be honest the horses are more important to me but the cars are my OH's thing!!

I drive a Ford KA. Commute a round trip of 30 miles a day, so I do around 180 - 200 miles a week unless I'm going somewhere particular at the weekend, and it probably costs me around £25 a week in fuel.

Good little car, not too pricey to tax or insure, reasonable fuel economy - but it is a bit of a pain when it comes to fitting in shavings - I can only get two in and that's one in the back seat and one in the passenger seat! Will go for something slightly bigger next time - more fiesta sized probably.

I'm on my 2nd Suzuki, it's a WagonR. I reckon I drive about 200 miles per week and put in £20-£25 worth of petrol each week.
With the back seats down it's got the space of a small van and I can get a LOT of stuff in there. But the car itself is small so will fit into teeny parking spaces.

I've had a KA a few years ago part ex'd my corrolla for it was cute little car then but felt at the time it was too small for me.

I think I am settled on getting a fiesta as I can have a 5dr one been searching them online, you can get some really lovely looking cars too.

Interesting reading though on how much you all put in fuel wise and travelling..
I guess I do about 60miles or so a week and that includes my work travelling, silly little stop starts cost lots in fuel. and then going to yard after work.

I have a rover 25 becuase it was cheap, low mileage, and works! It gets me to and from where I need to be, but it is very small - 3 door and the boot is tiny. So no good really but does the job, and OH has a large van so I can get stuff in the back of that.

We have too many cars, and none of them are economical :(

A 3 ltr BMW which I use for work mostly, plus a Disco to pull the trailer and cart the dogs round in. Also a sports car which is only used in the summer when the weather is nice, and my old VW Golf which I've had for years and refuse to part with for sentimental reasons. I've SORNed the Golf at the moment though as I haven't driven it for a while.

OP - you would think a little 1.2 Fiesta would be nice & cheap wouldn't you?!
That's exactly what I thought but because I have to go everywhere at the maximum speed I can I end up revving the knackers off the poor little thing and it costs a fortune in fuel!
We have a 1.2 petrol Fiesta (stables run about) and a 2.0 diesel A3 and the Audi is far more economical.
Why not look for a nice diesel golf? The 1.9 TDI is cheaper for me to insure than the Fiesta and it should be more fuel efficient too.
The Fiesta has done a job but it's sooooooooo slow! :D:rolleyes:
I do probably 200 miles per week though...

I did have a V reg 1.6 Renault Megane. FAB on petrol!!

But it died, so I was sensible (and wanted to save on fuel costs) and bought a 54 plate 1.2 Fiesta...

The Fiesta is WORSE on petrol than the old Megane!!! Doh!!!

yes I would think it was cheap lol, and of course where I am used to my VTEC kicking in when I want it to I will struggle like mad with a lesser engine ha ha ha.
I will have my hubby's car to drive still too for the speed, we have the same cars at the moment.

I did think of diesel's but thinking that the 1.2 petrol would surfice enough for the journeys I do each day..

ok i know its a bit boring but..............skoda fabia green line estate.............it is ment to do about 82 mpg, we do about 77 mpg and i think i am right in saying that it is now £0 tax ours is the older model and we have to pay.................................£20 a year

boring
but you can fit loades of stuff in the boot!

wow thats mad!

I do think though that some of the older cars are far more economical, not all.

So if a fiesta is more to run about what on earth do I get instead?

I've had the 4x4's, the sports, 1.6's and that was worse than my 2.2 is now.... mmm!

so frustrating having to find a good economical car to run about with..

Someone please help ha ha ha
