Having water supply added to field

Has anyone had their water supply connected to their field? My field has a road between my house and it so I can’t do it myself. I’m guessing they would attach a supply and metre to the nearest mains supply? Any idea on costings?

I did. The land outside my field (a verge) apparently isn’t part of the highway so I had to dig the trench myself and provide ducting. Me and OH did it, by hand, with shovels. We also had to go down a ditch was which awful but it was free so we didn’t complain too much. The meter is on the verge under a manhole cover which is near the mains. The worst bit was the tap.It has to have a particular valve and be fully enclosed in a cupboard and this was inspected before they came to connect it.

I can’t remember the exact cost but under £1k I think and much cheaper than the electric. it depends on how far you are from mains obviously.

Dont know in your part of the world but AW is £1200 minimum up to their meter(Roadside) and then the rest is down to you which they will have to inspect prior to them putting in the supply and as said they will specify what you need including depth of the pipe and non return valves to protect the main supply from contamination.
Do you have any friendly neighbours on the right side of the road as this may be an unofficial option?as its not expensive to tee off somebody elses supply with a private meter as long as you get on ok and sort out the financials

Thanks guys, there’s a section of unadopted land I’d probably have to dig then, about 10 metres but I know a couple of people who could do that for me for not too much (I’m considering putting some drainage in the field as well so could combine the two). The costs dont seem too much :)

Not sure what you intend putting in the field but I suggest just go for a simple standpipe on the edge of the field and then put in more when that has been approved and connected as water troughs open up a totally new can of worms that are best avoided as they wont need to ok anything once the supply is on.Even the original standpipe can be moved or deleted.

That’s what we did. There’s a standpipe on the fence in a box then a blue pipe coming off that tap down to the stables which we buried 1m deep.
