I'd definately consider shopping around & buying in, your farmer's prices seem a little expensive?

£14 big bale of barley straw (i.e. £1.40 conventional bale)
£17.50 big bale of hay (i.e. £1.75 conventional bale)
delivered - well I hope so - my straw is due this afternoon!!

Tell me about it!

Back in the summer I had to pay £3.50 a bale for barley straw!

Our local feed merchants imported some of the Canadian hay in, thinking they'd make a killing. It's very green, has no smell to it and they want £9 per bale!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bought some hay from neighbours, lovely meadow stuff at £1.50 which I'll use for feeding outside.

Problem is the flooding in Gloucestershire has mullered the crops this year, and it has put the prices of everything through the roof. I have to weigh up fuel costs if I transported it from elsewhere as my tow car does about 100 miles per £20 of fuel.

I'm half tempted to go to haylage if it is a similar price

He He, She says with a smug grin:

Have got myself the best OH in the world, he's a farmer/ and does all the local contracting and supplying. So i only get the best hay and straw.... as much as i want for free (all i have to do is love him... and thats not hard)

So far prices i've heard in my area are:-
Small bales of hay - £3.00 to £4.50.
Big round bales of straw - £22
Big round bales of hayledge - £25 - £30
Straw - havent a clue as i bought a load in ages ago and havent taken much notice!
I think a few farmers are trying it on - if people try and negociate - i'm sure they will do a deal. the weather wasnt that bad in our area - and farmers did manage to get their cuts in.

Don't know whether you noticed but it rained all cutting season. There was a window for about 1 week for all farms in our area to mow, turn and bale. Alot of fields either just didn't get cut due to the rush or went to seed before the weather broke. That's why prices are high.

we have been lucky as although smal bales in the area have been going for as much as £4.75 a bale we managed to get some very good hay for £2 a bale delivered special price just for us as good friend. and i think he said i can have straw £1.30 so very lucky

I know some farmers who do thousands upon thousands of hay bales and they are charging a whooping £6.50 per small bale

We made some hay, but also bought another 150 big bales and paid £20 per big bale.

Thats dirt cheap!!

Heston bales of straw are £20-£25 and round bales of haylage are going for £25.00-£30.00

TBH, I don't feel I owe any allegiance to buy from him when he is charging above the going rate - other farms are £3.50 per bale around here. Some of the straw is going black on the bottom of the bales in the barn, so I am very disinclined to use this anyway.

Good straw in glos is like rockin horse sh1t - and horrible stuff is £25 large bale compared to £12 last year. We've had better luck with hayledge but still going to be price rise but not that much - fingers crossed

in yorkshire its about a quid a bale of hay, but taking my horse to hartpury in a few weeks in glos and they have changed the hay allowance now - u get 2 "free" bales a week with livery and extra cost u 4.50 a bale!!!bear in mind livery is about 40 quid a week , limited turnout

I paid £4.50 small bale straight off the field - they are selling it for £6.00 a bale, last years hay is £5.50 and this years June hay is £8.00 a bale!!!

No idea about straw as I don't use it.

I'm not surprised they are selling for £9 a bale if they are importing from Canada - hay is VERY expensive here this year, so I very much doubt their profit is particularly high.

If I use Straw on my rubber mats, 1 bale would last about 10 days.

If you've got 2 horses, you would eat the haylage before it went off. You could always try a bale and see how long it lasts.
