I am trying to work out the most economical way to buy hay this winter
Does anyone roughly know how many small regular square bales would be in a big round and a heston (4 string)
Also what are people paying for the above bales?
I have just paid £30 for a round bale but its absolute rubbish I wont be buying again. Been offered Hestons for £75 Small v nice quality hay for £5 and haylage for £35 but tbh i wont be buying this as it will go rotten before i use it.

Thanks

I've been buying hestons from a hay contractor, so I asked him how many small bales in one, as I'd been told a heston was equivalent to 10. He said 13 small bales, and he should know as he bales for a lot of people around here. His is £30, which I think is a bargain. I would have though about 8 in a round bale???

mm, so my £75 is quite expensive really then! I assumed about 10.
The person who sold me the rubbish round claimed it was the size of 16 small bales ;-O the speed i went thru it horrified me if that was the case!
Anyone in my area? Gloucestershire/oxfordshire got any prices?- or even better supplier details

buying hay from now onwards is an uneconomical exercise. you should really have secured your hay and agreed a price back in july. bales vary enormously in weight and feed value. but on average a big round bale is equiv to 10 ish small bales, hestons around 15 bales. nutrional quality will depend on when made, grasses used, and fert and weather. a good hay/haylage retailer will happily give you an analysis.
