Im moving delicia to a new yard at the end of December. At the moment delica has only ever had a haynet when travelling, the rest of the time she is fed on the floor. The new yard has they new hay bar things. I have the choice of using the haybar of a hay net...

Personally i am unsure about haybars but can i hear some experienced views. the reason dee hardly ever has a haynet as she does a really marish thing of stricking it with her front leg....

Haybar is pretty much the same as feeding from the floor, but less waste if you have a messy horse. Sparks use to have a Haybar, but broke it after 3yrs as kept sitting on it! She now has a large trug instead as I didn't want to payout for another Haybar. The only problem with the Haybar is if they are fitted flush to the floor (need a gap at the bottom, to allow seeds etc.. to be sweep away).

We have had haybars for years, they are mostly good. We have only had one who tried to sit on/in hers and no other problems with them. The Appy empties hers out onto the floor every single night  and then happily eats off the floor :D The others all eat nicely out of theirs and we have no problems. We don't use haynets as paranoid about them getting caught up in them.

Well you're going to breed from her anyway eventually, right? Why bother giving her hay/haybar at all, if she likes getting her leg over just throw her straight out with a stallion and let her get it out of her system... they can have a roll in the hay ;)

Then use the fleecy one's idea of hay mixed in with the bedding for when she has a little lie down, tired after her romping!

:D:D:D

Chuck it on the floor. She can mix it in with her bedding so if she fancies a snack while she's lying down she doesn't have to get up.

;)

Excellent idea!

Or, tie it securely around her leg, so you know it's wrapped around it safely, rather than her doing it herself? After all, you don't want the hay wasted.

Well the Appy has not managed to do anything to herself or the haybar, which given her ability to cause bother in an empty box says something for haybars :D
Anything left within her reach is fair game, hence often her grooming kit is to be found outside below her window and the plaiting bands out of the box she destroyed when I left it in reach overnight, are STILL turning up in her bed about a month on! If the fool of a mare does get her leg in the haybar she should have no problem getting it back out and they do have rolled tops to ensure nothing to get caught on :)

Yeah i was thinking this, but the stallions too £££££ so i might just let her loose with the gypseys, or send her to Liquid and Envy, im sure she will get knocked up in no time. Then i can claim benefits i can have a martini AND hay bar!

if i throw the water on her will this help her hydration? dee has to have her hay soaked so if its tied to her legs so i need to stand her in four buckets of water?

Also, if i throw some carrots at her, will she be happier?

Definitely!

I wouldn't bother standing her in water, just point the hose at her.

The mobile haynet has always been one of my favourites, then wherever they go, they can have a nibble. Bless them.

Bless them. Pretty ponies! aww

Can i ride her like this? Suppose with will make her arch her neck and lift her legs up....

I wouldn't have thought it of her.

If you get those ones with the pink fur lining them then they'll be extra dressagey :)

can i borrow yours?

SO this hay bar, is she ok to have it, seriosuly? I mean shes only 9, most bars you have to be over 21.....although some you can be over 18... i cant really wait 8 years to feed her hay, im worried she might lose weight

It's fine, remember you're her Mummy, and you've given permission.
