My hay supplier has put his delivery charge up tp 75p a bale. He only comes about six miles and I cant see the sense in a per bale price as the more I buy the more delivry charge im paying which sort of makes buying in bulk pointless.

Is it just more or is this a rip off?

Could you get together with someone and pick it up in a lorry/ trailer? Maybe put a note up in local feed store for sharing pick up (I'm presuming u mean small bales, I get 40 in my trailer) 75p sounds a lot without a discount for larger deliveries, I suppose they are still loading it their end however many u have. If someone has a lorry that would take a lot they may appreciate the loading/unloading help with a bit of petrol money to make it worth their while

Thanks I do collect at the moment but I just cant see the sense in a per bale delivery charge. I can only collect a few bales at a time and would get a bigger delivery but not at that price!

Seems like a hidden cost increase to me. Never heard of a delivery charge before - especially per bale.

Is the hay particularly cheap and your supplier has found out others charge more?

No theres no shortage of hay but it is good hay, just cant get my head round delivery charge!
I can, given the price of fuel. The more weight there is on the wagon, the more fuel it uses so the higher the cost of the delivery. In fact if you weren't buying in bulk it's likely that you wouldn't get delivery at all.

You could go and collect the hay in your car but how many journeys would it take and how much would it cost you in fuel, time and inconvenience?

You aren't just paying for the haulier's fuel. There is wear and tear on his equipment, the driver's time and of course convenience to you to be taken into account.

In fact 75 pence a bale sounds reasonable to me.

Never heard of a delivery charge before - especially per bale. It's likely then that the cost of delivery is hidden in the cost of the bale. Which, of course makes it unfair to those who collect their .

Echo this.
My farrier now charges a "petrol fee" . its £X for a trim and £Y for a set of shoes all plus his petrol fee. Cant blame him fuel and transport costs are crippling us all.

The price of fuel has rocketted over the last couple of years. I bought my current car 18 months ago. in that time the cost of filling the fuel tank has shot up by £15.

I could understand a set delivery charge depending on the size is the order, and then charging delivery per mile travelled, but not per bale. How odd. Have you asked why??
