thought i ought to share this one, i saw this 'compost maker' for £20 at garden centre and thought it was worth a try. mounted on top of a couple of pallets, with a solid base, wrapped in chicken wire so it's not chewable. it's working so far, no waste, no problems, and it's standing up to the horses... hope it lasts all winter!
apologies if pic is big, photobucket's playing up and i can't resize it.

I'd worry with mine about what they would do with all the wire and wood - because they eat everything. Thats the reason they're only trusted with tractor tyres to put their hay in :)

I made something similar but not as posh as this.
It came for free from a stable mates mum who was having a patio built, the stone was delivered in it and would have been smashed up and chucked out.
I put four posts on it and eventually a roof of Rhinofloor (wood pattern) and some cheap willow windbreak bought from Wilkinsons.
My gelding used to stick his head in it in summer to shelter from the flies and sun and in winter, from the rain and it kept his hay dryish and his feed and hay free from the snow. It worked very well thro the bad winters.
Of course this only worked because he had his own paddock but it would keep hay out of the mud without the roof if there were more feeding from it.
I haven't mastered inserting photos but if anyone wants to look in my album, there's pics in there.
