The price of hay has doubled here this summer it seems with many of my long time hay sources. The excuse........high fuel costs and recent floods. The floods only hurt the corn crop though and hay is abundant . Also, fuel (although high) is not that much higher than last summer

I think many local hay farmers are taking advantage and making excuses to raise the price. They are getting it too from preople out West who are willing to come here with semi trucks and take all of our hay. I cannot wait until this bubble bursts and they have to go back down and rely on us locals again. I know one local man who has lost me as a customer forever with the price he demanded this year. When the semis stop coming for his hay I hope none of the locals go back to him.

I agree to take an opportunity when you can get it but come on! Try and remember those who have kept you in business all these years!

Out of curiosity, what did you pay 5 years ago?

What's happened to a lot of farmers in Canada is they've absorbed at least part of the rise since gas was half what it is currently but now they're having to make it up, especially with so many areas having inclement weather this season.

Also, that's the great thing about American, isn't it? That the market rules and everyone has the right to free enterprise?

Here in the Uk the hay prices are also set to rise.
We still have two fields yet to cut, and it's going well over it's best nutritionwise.
The lady next door wanted small bale hay but has given up and asked the contractor to make anything he can even big bales.
the cost of making it has gone sky high, if you consider the wrap/string/netting/baling twine are all made from plastic (oil) and the costs for diesel are beyond a joke.
I don't think anyone is making big bucks, more the costs to them is so high they have no option.
My haymaking bills are almost double what they were previously, so it makes sense the price will have to double too.
I'm also investigating alternative bedding, we use a mix of shavings and miscanthus, but that too is expensive.
I'm considering having the stable floors sprayed with rubber, as a local event yard has done this with some success. I'd still use bedding but much less.

Same here. Fuel price up and fertilizer too.I've 2/3 of my hay in and the rest is still standing. I've hardly any of last years hay left as horses should now be grazing one of the hay fields but arnt as the hay is still standing there. Weathers abysmal and its chicking it down at the moment too.
Food generaly has gone up,chicken, bacon, pork, beef. Inputs are rising steeply. I can see it being a difficult winter for many.

I feel very lucky reading this - I found a great hay source last year and he didn't put his prices up this year. Paid €3 per small bale and he cut in early June so we got it off the field while it was still dry (before the Irish summer monsoon season started - a big thunderstorm went over this afternoon and we've had flooding around the country).

I agree- people who jack up prices on their neighbours lose out in the end - what goes around comes around.
