Just wondering how much longer you all are going to be putting hay out in the field. Our lot are certainly less interested in the hay, but are still (10 mares) going through 3 round bales a week.
Not much longer if the mild weather continues as the grass is def growing. Mare is in a small field on her own and gets a slice of small bale hay just to top up the minimal grazing. We'll wind up going from supplementing with hay to strip grazing in no time!!!
We have cut it down a bit now as they are grazing during the day but I still put it out first thing when I turn out so they have a good belly full to start the day off with. I'll stop putting it in when they stop eating it. When they leave it I can assume that they are finding enough grass to eat.
As we have 3 ponies on 3 acres we have 2 designated "trash paddocks" and 2 "summer fields. They won't be going onto the summer grazing until the spring so have a bale between them every day until then.
