Yep, I think if you make some enquiries that's a decent price in Kent. Some Kent people have been posting about having trouble getting hay. I can't help wondering about that though, my farmer had a good late crop.

You're in Scotland though aren't you MrsD? The big feedroom local to me (in Kent) is selling small bales at £6 per bale, and some of them aren't great. We had a thread recently from someone in the Medway area who couldn't find any hay at all, and I believe there was also one from someone elsewhere in Kent. My friend near to me is using heston bales and she thinks she's doing well to pay £40 for them. Round bales are £50+ each. People are baling some rough old fields round here because they know people are going to buy it.
So, if I needed to get hay in for the winter and could get some good stuff from a trusted source at £4.75 per bale I'd probably go for it to be honest.

I thought heavy bales meant too much moisture and therefore mould? Obviously, you don't want the very light ones that have not been baled tightly enough but watch out for bales that are too heavy too.

Ive been paying £5 a bale for good quality hay direct to my door and Im in Norfolk. I did weigh the bales but cant remember if they were 15 or 25KG.

In Dorset I bought small bales of seed hay at £5 a bale delivered, and also large round bales of meadow hay for £20 a bale collected.

There does seem to be great disparagement in prices though.

Also I have notice a few people getting 3 cuts this year.

I'm in Sittingbourne Kent and was looking for hay
I have had many offers for hay small bales which was 4.00 Inc delivery
And big rounds for 45, 48 and 30 so it really does fairy
I do believe and been told by different people there is a struggle for hay
, I do believe there is hay out there but you've got to be prepared to pay the price I'm afraid

In Cornwall, top quality small bales are £4 delivered, and found some large bales at £38.

I think if it is top quality and you know where it has been cut you won't go wrong x

I get 1 large round bale of hay for £25 and pick it up which I thought was blooming good. The hay isnt the best I have seen but it is nice. We have had quite a good year for hay here provided farmers have been organised.

Small bales in west herts/london side are £4.50 delivered for me :). Another supplier is £5 delivered and the local feed shop delivered is £6 and their price has been dropping!

Oh my word what a price! I get my hay which is amazing, no dust, lovely smell, great amount in each bale for £2.50. Get small hayledge bales wrapped, delivered and stacked in my stable for £5.50 each. :-)

We've had a fantastic amount of grass this year.... the most in the 12yrs I've been at my place I'd say.... plus my lawn has needed cutting every fortnight throughout the summer, so surely the yield this year is way above what we had last year and therefore there should be plenty of hay to go round?

The chap who delivered my haylage said his friend had got nearly double off one strip of land than they'd got last year.... that's in Kent.

Is it the same everywhere?

I used to be married to a farmer, and he did small bales for contract when getting paid per bale, and bigger bales for himself or paid per acre, I agree mouldy and wet will be heavy, heavy for their size.
My boy likes the stalky stuff, and leaves the leaves of his haylage at the moment.

I made some - got loads more than expected - sold some for £3.50 a bale delivered. My supplier of big bale haylage will prob be £25 per bale delivered again and he made 600 compared to last years 200 !!!!!

Please can posters say their location for what price they are paying as those of us using phones to access H&H only see posters names, not avatars or signatures etc. Thank you :)

When you check the internet for hay for sale it becomes apparant that the West Country had the best weather this spring & summer because tthey are the area with the best prices & the most hay available.........................it's a pity diesel is so expensive so fetching a lorry load wouldn't be cost effective.
