Hay shortage

I'm hoping it won't come to that, but I would probably go for readigrass and hi-fi mixed, assuming I couldn't get haylage either. We have managed to get hay for the next month (YO gets it in each month as a regular order) but it has gone up to £4 a bale.

thats cheap over here, im paying £40 a big round bale and £5 a small square and to top it off my horse eats like well a horse lol but its alot. i did the readi grass/hi fi lite last year and coped fine. its an expensive option tho but luckily we dont and prob wont have a shortage over here this winter

If anyone has transport to collect hay there's loads in the Wisbech area Yellow Ad's £2.50 upwards a bale.

Can PM numbers if anyone needs them - getting this weeks paper tonight.

Our haylage supplier has said she won't have a problem supplying us all year

Don't like to be too smug but .......... collected all my hay off the field on Monday, cut Friday and no rain so very good hay considering it's August made. Just put the last bale away and the heavens opened! £2 per bale so feeling very pleased with myself! The guys that made it said that if people hadn't got it in by Monday night chances were they wouldn't get any.

Well we are finally catching up. Our first cut was down by 2/3rds of the normal yield. Just taking the second cut now from 4 fields and we are finally up to; 300 X 1,500lbs large rounds in the barn and 4,000 small squares stacked with another 1,000 enroute and needing to be unloaded this afternoon. We should get approximately another 100 large rounds from another field, so we will be fine and will still have a number to sell this year.....phew!

Everyone round me (Derbys) have got good yields so should be okay. Not sure on price as they all vary. I got 80 bales of last years in when things were looking bleak in July and got another 70 off the field at the weekend - all for the same as I paid last year or a smigin less. I have enough for 18 months now so quite happy as I like to feed last years hay really.

Well my friends the farmers where I go and look after their horses have so much hay and haylage they don't know where they're going to store it all!. So hopefully they'll drop off a big round bale from time to time round the corner where my two are kept...

Hay was short around here a month ago due obviously to the weather & not being able to get the crop in but now there is no shortage now. I have bought the hay for my lad, 120 bales, at the same price as last year, £2 a bale. My supplier only cuts once & this year, although the hay isn't quite as good as last year, had a bumper crop.

Not sure it will get to that, we have just had hay and haylage cut at our yard and still had some left over from last year. Do think the price could creep up though.....

We've just paid £2.00 per small bale off the field. My husband has lost his parking space in the garage (sorry darling) as its jammed with hay!

But I have heard of people panicking and buying hay at £4.50 a bale...which I suspect is the price delivered.

He he he, again, don't want to be smug but I now have 550 bales in my barn for £1 a bale! People round here are saying they'd give us £3 a bale for it now but I am going to hang on to it til Christmas and see what the market is like, and how much we are using ourselves....

How inconsiderate! I put a shed up as the garage is attached to the house and I was paranoid about burning it down and what the insurance company would make of it.

I will so upset if there isn't a shortage after all my efforts, though for horse/animal welfare generally we'd better hope that there isn't. I suspect supplies will be getting tight by Christmas but my crystal ball doesn't always work.
