Many years ago my husband made a hay soaker out of a water tank (as goes in the loft), he put a tap on it (like on a water butt) and I then put some pipe which fed the water out of the soaker into a drainage ditch.

It worked well as I soaked the hay in the shelter and the tank had a lid on it. I soaked in the morning and then they had hay at night. However it did have a few problems - one being that the tanks had strengthening supports inside so we had to drill holes through these to get the water down to the tap. The main problem was the tap was quite narrow and got silted up quite a lot. Does anyone know where I could get something similar that is bigger - about an inch in diameter (or more)? I want to put a tap on the bottom of a large wheelie bin which I think would work well in my current situation.

I have a hay cube which does not have a tap, it has tubing with a screw on cap which you release to let the water out. Could you make something with domestic waste pipe?

Thank you all for your ideas. They wine barrel tap is the sort of thing I had but the exit spout is too narrow - I used to end up blowing down it from the other end of the pipe to clear the blockage:)

I will investigate the hay cube idea.

First I need to find a couple of cheap wheelie bins. There are some on Ebay but too far away.

Hi, my OH built exactly the same thing for me years ago and even with a 'sieve' fitted in the bottom I abandoned it because unbunging it in the depths of winter wasn't fun. There used to be a screw thread and cap sold that could be fitted to any container but, like you I am still looking for it. Maybe camping, diy, plumbing or home brewing shops?
