Do they do much of a better job than the dustibin and kettle method? Are they worth the investment for two horses? Thanks.

They do a much better job that a dustbin & kettle but they are extremely expensive, even if you are steaming for 2 horses.

There is a cheaper method, you can make your own steamer by using a wheelie bin & a wallpaper stripper. Drill a hole in the side of the bin near the base & run the hose from the stripper through it. Connect up the steamer head to the hose inside the bin & have that facing upwards. Then fit a metal grille across the bottom of the bin (a metal plate drainer will do the job, this will keep the hay from falling onto the steamer head & blocking it. You then connect the other end of the hose to the 'kettle' part of the stripper & plug it in to the mains on a timer that way when you arrio e at the yard you will have a bin of nicely steamed hay.

If you are a litle more able you can make up some copper pipework with prongs that will stick up into the hay & connect that to the stripper & the steaming will be easier, but the first idea does work. :)

Not really answering your question but have just seen this on ebay which seems to be a compromise between the professional models and simple dustbin/kettle:

Hah! I'd not seen them advertised before, they are easy to make & you can build one, even a bigger one for a fraction of that cost:-
Wheelie bin £37.29 delivered (120 litre)http://wheelie-bins-direct2u.co.uk/
Wallpaper stripper £29.99 http://www.screwfix.com/p/direct-power-dpb053stm-2000w-wallpaper-stripper-240v/28643
Timer £6.99 (blister pack of 3)http://www.screwfix.com/p/plug-in-mechanical-daily-timer-pack-of-3/67592

Comes to £74.27 plus a little time & you'll save yourself around £175 :)
