Hay warning

For those buying hay, please check carefully that it is coming from your usual source.

There is an area of land on the edge of my village which is usually just topped and left. this year it has been baled into big bale hay. Hopefully this is for one of the local livestock farmers as their hay fields will be dissapointing this year.

The field concerned has lots of marsh ragwort.

This year has been a poor year for grass growth round here, too dry but this seems to have resulted in it being a 'good' year for ragwort, lots in the (public) park next to us.

I'm in East Anglia, and as said expect this has been baled for a local livestock farmer. Someone local does a lot of baling for the horse trade and that is always small bale.

My warning is that if you are in an area that has been dry this spring, double check the source of the hay. Chances are that this is not the only field, that usually just gets topped, being baled for hay
