Looking for product reviews, does anyone use a haybag rather than a haynet for their horses? I was wondering if it would be useful for travelling as it might be less messy. Anyone got personal experience?
I tried one for a while and no - actually more hay can be pulled from a hay bag than a small holed hay net. We also found they were harder to secure safely because there is no attachment point at the bottom so it swung about more.
I drop a small holed het into a haybag for our messy greedy eater! There is less mess (but still a fair bit) There is a metal ring on the bottom of ours, I fasten a clip to this to stop it swinging about
Have used the Shires one daily for 2 years, still going strong, and has a clip on the bottom at the back so you cab fix it there too. Horse can pull out as much as they like through the hole, so mess rather depends on the horse! Have see some with a net bit across the hole, poss in Rideaway catalogue?
I use a hay bag and my horses have all learned to open it (design flaw!) ... however there is virtually no mess at all, even when travelling, as they don't seem to lift their nose out even for a moment. Might as well give them a nosebag.
I have found mine creates about the same amount of mess as a normal hay net. But if you buy one make sure it is the large one, not standard. Made that mistake when I lost my first one, now stuck with one that does not take much hay. It is however super easy to fill up, and never had a problem with it last for short time.
Think I need to go to Specsavers. Glanced at the thread title and thought it said 'Handbag rather than haynet for travelling'. Was wondering how that would work!!!!
I put a small holed haynet inside a haybag and carry in the tack area as a spare which keeps mess to a minimum. The pony just has a conventional small holed net tied up as the hay bag, I find, makes more mess because it has one big hole so he just pulls huge chunks out and drops most of it!
