I have been looking at getting one of these for my 3yrold. They seem like a very good idea, as hay on the floor is seen as a game to be spread out as far as poss and don't like him eating from nets all of the time....but they seem very expensive...

So the question is...are they worth the money?

I think they are

My TB mare is a minger and wastes hay so I bought a H/B and it's brilliant.

I then bought a pony sized one for my QH mare and I managed to get it at a really decent price from ebay.

Plus I HATE filling haynets so anything removing the need for a hay net is a bonus!

I like mine. The Dizz is wasteful no matter what system I use, as in she pulls the stuff out and then forgets to eat it!

I was going to make one, but given the time and faffing about, for us it was easier and probably cheaper to get the Haybar.

i have one that i used but not allowed them on new yard as yard owner doesnt want us to use them so not sure where you are but PM me as ill sell you mine cheap

Those of you who use haybars... I don't weigh my nets as such but just gauge by hand, if you're feeding from round bales as opposed to sections of hay how do you work out how much you're feeding? Also, what do you do about wetting/soaking your hay?

I didnt use a hay bar but used to feed wet hay on the floor, i used to fill up a dengie hi fi or simular plastic feed bag put some holes in the bottom and stick the hose in to soak it. My horse never liked it really wet so it was just really well sprayed down.
once the water had drained it was not heavier than a haynet, just tip it out in the haybar.
you can weight in the bag as well as they dont weight that much.
if not just fill the haynet like normal and just empty it out in the haybar. you'll know if its right as it will be the about the same weight as say 2 sections.

I don't use a haybar but feed from the floor so same 'problem' I suppose. I weigh all my hay into nets (whether its a round bale or sections (the sections in our bales vary quite a lot in weight)), soak and drain in net and then just tip out.

I have a spring balance and a big blue IKEA bag for hay weighing. Fill bag from roll, attach to balance and lift up by hook on the balance. I feed off the floor though.

I don't soak my hay.

Home made haybars - cost less than a tenner using stuff we had left from other projects.

Hay is by the armful - no measuring here, I know what they eat.

We use haybars and steam our hay. We feed our 3 ad-lib hay and admittedly 2 of them do prefer to pull the hay out to eat off the floor. I wouldn't use a haynet if you paid me though!
