HayBars- anyone got one?

Are they good? Does most of the hay stay in the HayBar?

My new stables have been put up and should be ready by the end of next week

(finally!) I had end-fill doors put on the stables so I could fill hay up without going into the stables, but didn't have hayracks as I have some ponies so they'd be too high and I don't like having hay too high anyway.

So I was thinking of getting some HayBars instead

It depends what you horse is like! Jigsaw has one and his hay mainly stays in the hay bar. Another horse on the yard drags it out all over the stable!

Bought one today because my horse is on box rest and I hate the mess on the floor and dont want him on haynets all the time.6 of us on our yard have them everyone thinks they are great.Shop around I paid £50 but a lot of people are paying £70.

Yes, both my girls have one and they are really good... Grace pulls some out, but most stays in and therefore I don't get the waste from her I get with a net. Hannah won't have it on the floor because she ends up pawing it into her bed and weeing on it

She never has one blade of haylage in her bed

Being the provebial skin flint, I got Brother-in-law to make one for Spider's new stable.

It works a treat.

totally useless for my boy, he stuffs his nose to the bottom then throws it all over the floor. Got rid of it and back to hay nets! I like the idea though of them!

both my boys have them. They are great, no probs at all with mess making and its a natural eating position for them, which benefits them dentistry wise!

A few of us at the yard have just bought them and they are fab! I'd say there's less hay on the floor than previously when stray hay used to fall from the net.

Anyone got any ideas/experience on how a horse with only one eye would cope with a HayBar? I'd love to get one but am cooncerned that he'd ram his head in and then injure himself coz of no vision at all on one side. He thinks if he can't see anything, that means there ISN'T anything. Er...WRONG!!!

I have just installed them in our new stables, they are fantastic and worth every penny, just watch if you are using haylage that you clear out whats left at the bottom of the haybar every now and again so its doesn't go mouldy. I would highly recomment them.

They are good, but mine have both needed repairs and remounting on wall after only 1 year. Also if your horse is messy the hay gets dragged everywhere!! Echo the comments above about cleaning the bottom bits of haylage out!!

I keep an old rubber feed skip in the bottom of mine which catches all the hay seeds etc. Makes it much easier to keep the bottom clean!

Mine have all got fantastic home-made versions, that cost nothing except a bit of time

They all get on great with them, some of the horses pull the hay out but the majority just munch away happily, I would NEVER go back to haynets

Those who made home-made ones, have you got a piccie of it and what is it made of? Also how high are they?

I will try to remember to take my camera tomorrow and get pics. Ours have two metal bars which fasten to the walls- a friend who owed us a favour is an engineer and made these up for us. OH then cut ply wood to size and it slots in behind the bars. Really easy to clean as the ply just slips out, they are great I am thrilled with them. Ok, gonna put camera on the side now so I don't forget it in the morning!

A cheaper option is a plastic barrel cut down to size with a weight in bottom so they can't tip it over. We've done it for years without any accidents/incidents

a friend of mine made them out of tongue and groove in a way that you could lift the board out completely. Think that she had a type of "runner" made that was sort of 2 narrow bars then the t and g slotted into it, if that makes sense???
