haybars - does anyone use them?

Yep, we use them. None of ours toss the hay out at all, so i love them!

Some horse do get there hay out of them but the problem i had was that my warmblood demolished it within two days making it dangerous with sharp edges. He never cribs or chews his door frame so there is no garantee any horse wouldnt do it.

I have one and its wonderful! ned was a bit suspicious at first but once he realised it was full of hay he had no problems!

the hay stays in great - and much less hassle than filling haynets

Id have one for my ID but I know from experience that it would take him five minutes or less to completely demolish it....so Im stuck feeding hay off the floor! Am sure my old cob would love one though.

I believe so. They must be pretty tough but I know full well ID would get a front leg in it and rip it off the wall.... so speaks the voice of experience having spent many hours putting up wall matting for him only to come the next day and find him standing on a big pile of rubber!!

Thank goodness for Cribbox! Every day is a challenge!

My two mares both have one... one of which has a four month old colt who chew EVERYTHING but he has not even touched the haybar as he just eats out of it. If you make sure there is always hay in it, then there is no reason they would see it as something to chew.

Both of my mares are big girls (16.2hh IDxTB and 17hh WBxTB) and they both lean on it a lot when going right to the bottom to get the scraps, and so far they have both been fine. Just make sure you follow the instructions exactly when fitting it and you should have a very happy horse!

My two love theirs and Grace's topline is looking great since she started using it because she was a bit upside down when I took her on as she had not done any work.

I had my horse at livery in a prof. eventer yard and she had them in all the stables - some of the horses were nervous of it to start with. My big ID loved it and I'm sure his topline improved because of it. It is only a piece of plastic, so I think expensive for what it is, but I did buy one when I moved yards. Also my destructor youngster who kicks everything in the stable has kept it in one peice !!

Archie has one and i think they are great, sometimes there is abit of hay on the floor but generally he eats it all up with no mess. He used to be awful with a haynet as he wouldnt eat off the floor, and when i fed him from the floor he would just churn it around his stable.

Oh yes, forgot to say about that!

Hannah was horrendously messy with her haylage in a haynet, now there is none on the floor at all. Grace takes some of it out and plonks it on the floor but I do not waste nearly as much with her as I used to when she had it in a net.

The horse I recently sold used to put his nose in and toss the hay out and put the hay all over the bed. So it defeated the object of having the hay bar. I am sure he done it on purpose because I think his aim in life was to just annoy me!!!

My new horse 5yo TB mare, who had lived out for the past 2 years in a field and I thought she may have issues with it has taken to using it fine and eats out of it fine.

All those that I have seen are the corner variety. Although I know that haybar do a pony version, which may not have to be attached across a corner (or I could be totally dreaming that!!)

Do you find that horses that "like their food" tend to eat their hay a lot quicker? Would love one for my boy but worry that he'll just eat it ten times as quick and get bored (is on rest turnout due to injury).
