My boy was coughing so changed from a haynet to a hay bar! Seems to have done the trick but he is wasting & mixing so much hay in his shavings bed its costing me a small fortune! Any ideas??
0y chap does the same thing with his, but I probably overfill it as I want him to have ad-lib hay. The pony doesn't have this irratating habit with hers though.
My two do like to pull some hay out of their bars, so now instead of filling it right up once a day with a bale, I put in a couple of slices in the morning, a slice late afternoon and then fill it about half full for the night which seems to work.
I do still have a little waste, but only a handful or two - if I do need to give them hay for a longer period, I have found that half filling the bar and putting a few slices on the floor beside it works well as they eat that first and then go onto the bar.
I can leave the whole hay ration on the floor - that gets trashed.
I have no idea about the wastage dont think there is a great deal you can do to be honest but the benefits of the haybar are fabulous improves topline no end!
all i can think of it to fix a tie ring down low on the wall behind the haybar, and tie a small-holed haynet to it... that way they can't get their feet stuck in the net (due to haybar being in the way) and they'll be unable to pull it all out over the top... 1 of mine does exactly the same thing, very annoying! i'm going to try this with her.
