How much loose hay (rather than the packed small square bales) fits in the full size haybars? I have always said no to then due to hay just being pulled out but now wondering if this would be the way to go for Robin. I need it to hold 13 or 14kg.

I'd say you'd get that much in. Might have to squash down a little. I would put 8 or 9 kg (from a round bale so fluffier than squashed small bale flakes) in the one at the last yard and it would look a bit... sad... but not empty. I think 14kg would look generously full but would fit.

Saw your other post. Poor boy. I’ve seen lots of pictures of people using old travel cots as hay feeders for their horses. Just need to make sure it’s secure. Might be an option if it’s a temporary measure? (And will be cheaper!)

I switched from a haybar to hay cubes to cut down on wastage.

Feeding from a haybar was less wastage than feeding from the ground but still a fair bit trampled into the bed.

My three hay haycubes now and theres no water with 2 of the horses. The messy TB is minimal wastage too.

They are handy for soaking hay too; that's what they were originally bought for.

I like them. They should hold enough for what you need. I prefer not using hay nets as the action of eating from a net can be worse for their necks.

I can fit one of the big slabs in there easily from the 8ft bales. Put it this way.... all the poor doers and bigger horses on the yard never run out of hay if there hay bar is full when you leave!
