I'm worried about my mare at the moment. She has been in a new field for a couple of weeks (same yard). When riding her the last couple of times she makes a long groaning noise which is usually followed by a cough but not always. She also has bloodshot eyes. The field she has gone in has a lot of buttercups which are going to be sprayed soon. I don't want to call a vet if I can treat her with something but I'm worried about her. I have added garlic to her feed. :(

Not badly but she tugs on the reins towards the end of the ride. The groaning sound she makes isn't a pain groan but more like when we would try and supress a cough, and sometimes the cough comes out or its like its stuck. x

Just a quick update! I bought some Naf respirator and she has been on it for 4 days and there is a marked improvement! Glad I didn't have to call the vet (although wouldn't have hesitated if I had to) but so glad she is looking better. I know animals can't put on how they feel and she was so listless and her eyes were bloodshot, it broke my heart seeing her like that. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Naf respirator to anyone in the future!

My cob makes that groaning nose and the snorts, but no other symptoms and is fine in himself. All the cobs I've ridden have done it too. One of mine used to move his lips and the same time so it looked like he was moaning to himself. Glad you've found something that helps.
