All other liveries at a potential yard are part so haylage is included. I'll be going DIY and I've been considering trying Forrest on haylage again for a while (he went through a very nutty stage last time I tried) though would soak it as much as I can.

They suggested me just using from their big bales and I'd pay a set amount every week. Currently F's quite fussy with his hay and doesn't even get through 2 slices a night though I'd expect him to eat more haylage. He'd be stabled from 5pm to about 6:30am and is a 17hh TB.

Any ideas on how much the set amount should be, don't want to be ripped off but want to make sure I'm being fair.

When I had three on it one big bale lasted me 10 days, so 1 horse would have app 1 bale a month. If feeding small sections of hay my 16.1 Tb would probably have 4 sections a day, the other two would get three. Hope that's some help!

I think big bales are about 200kg, and cost £20 - £25. I woud expect a horse that size to eat about 8kg per night dependingf on what else he gets so that works out about errr £1 per day ie £7 per week. I use 3 small bales (about 35kg) per week at the moment for 2 x 16hh good doers. This is also about 8kg per day but they are in most of the time. They also have alot of chaff and other bulk feeds. The small bales are £6.50 each so costs me almost £10 per week per horse, the large bales do work out cheaper.

Becs I pay £20 p/m for haylage

Where you moving to? PM me!

Thanks everyone. That's really good Krista, I'd be happy if it were that, hope I can get it that cheap but EVERYTHING seems to be so expensive there that I'm guessing it won't be!

I'll PM you!

I supply my liveries with big round bale haylage, we have 5 horses on it rangeing from 15.2hh - 16.3hh, this tends to last 8 days which I charge £6 per horse per bale. Our small bale hay in Devon is £3.60 per bale from feed merchants, we used to use about 3 bales of this per horse per week so as you can see we saved dramatically with the big bale haylage and it is much better for the horses' respiratory equipment!!! Haylage only tends to send horses hyper if it was cut and baled at a very rich time, when however, leave it until end of Aug before cutting and bale within 3 days, this way it is more like a superb quality hay but with a little more moisture whereas some haylage is very moist and sweet which causes the problems!! Hope this helps
