Hi, has anyone found a haylage that could be suitable for a horse with a sensitive tummy? I cant feed seed hay to my boy because it goes straight through him and our meadow hay might be in short supply this year. Horse is also a good doer. Any thoughts gratefully appreciated. Thanks :)

I would try and stick to as high a dry matter and fibre content as possible - seed hay and meadow hay will tend to have a higher dry matter than haylage, quite bizarre that seed hay 'goes straight through him' are you sure it wasn't mouldy or something....what ever you try obviously make sure you introduce it in to his diet very very gradually.

i'd tend to agree with KKC, but if you can't feed seed hay or haylage becomes the only thing available to you then try to get hold of TRM Ireland GNF, or Naf Thrive, or Feedmark Settlex. They all contain a natural montmorillionite clay that helps to act as an antacid and to soothe their tummy, so that it can work properly. But they won't add calories per se - tho the horse may look better as they are feeling better.

As an alternative, my old tb used to get quite skittish droppings from haylege, but this improved when I started feeding NAF Pink Powder.

I can't feed my 29year old pony haylage cause it makes him scour :-(

I just fed him hay last year, and have grown standing hay for this winter but if hay had been in short supply I would personally prefer to feed chaff or redigrass rather than haylage.
