Got my 2 mares in last night as the farrier coming today to do trims. They were bedding down shavings, usual food and 2 squares of hay each, the 2 boys stabled as usual(girls out for the summer) small short feed this morning and turned out in small paddock with a little hay. This afternoon got them in, same small short feed, but opened a bale of haylage I'd bought the day before and put just one square each in haynets to keep them occupied, while having feet trimmed, the 2 boys still on what hay I have left(3 bales). Well my young mare started coughing badly, managed to get front feet done and my old mare started wheezing badly(I thought a chicken was close till I realised it was her) She has had breathing problems in the past, but have managed to ease them and she was breathing ok this morning and this afternoon when I brought them in. Have turned both out to night the young mare has stopped coughing but my old mare still wheezing. Has anyone else had the same problem.

Very strange. Haylage is usually much better for breathing. My old man wheezes on hay unless soaked, but fine on haylage. If your old mare is still wheezing in the morning and has got the heave line from breathing heavily i would get vet to give a shot of steroids to help her as its v tiring for them.
